Night Vision for Civilians

Anyone of the member could you tell me which Generation of Night Vision is allow for Civilian use, (Gen-1,2,etc)? If any Govt. Order pl mention for references please. Thank you.

I do not think night vision devices are a big issue. They are available for sale at ebay and at http://am-ie.com/products/night_vision_binoculars/ Probably these people might be aware of government order if any.

Night vision binoculars are prohibited for civilians.

You may go for Low light binoculars if possible.

Can you please provide link or copy of legal document that confirms your opinion. If you visit the link about the Indian website I have provided in my previous post, you will find that night vision devices are up for sale. Like any other device night vision devices have many civillian uses like scouting game, security and surveillance, camping fun / exploring caves, night time navigation, night fishing and boating, wildlife observation, search and rescue.

Moreover if someone wants, he can also convert his webcam, digital camera etc. into night vision devices. Following links provide the information:

Hi frnds,

Thank you so much for your valuable help and comments. I am trying to procure from different night vision dealers, but what they always asked me is the end user certificate which is very deficult to have for the individaul user or if a copy of legal order for the use of civilian is available, they can send out the items. My requirement is just for camping fun and game scouting, any help from members are solicited pl.

Followed up on GBMs link, called up the fellas, apparently my request was not kosher, since I am an ornery ceeveelian!
So thar goes my dream to peer into the darkened bedroom of my neighbour

Since thats the reason the governmaent guys THINK we ornery critters need it fer.
Tried the Wildlife NGO spiel, didna work either, they' didna seem to care too much that I could get piles cause I couldna see the horned wild critter coming in quietly from my behind.
Yours still very truly in the DARK.

the end user cert can be one given by you saying that its for persnol use for watching wildlife at night etc and will not be sold/given to any one.
one can always ask the sellers what kind of end user cert they want.

most night vision on the market are upto 3rd gen, the latest ones are with the government and old stuff is goes to the market for us to enjoy. ie the government will not allow 5th gen to be on the market until they have the 7th gen.

Only 1st. gen seem affordable, 2nd. & onwards cost a bomb!

1st gen is affordable because it has an image that leaves quite a lot to be desired! I would save my money, or get a camcorder that has a "night vision mode" and invest in a higher powered illuminator. If you want an image that you can actually see details with, you need to get 3rd generation IMHO but a camcorder with an illuminator works quite well.

Agreed, 1st gen. are pretty basic but 2nd/3rd gen. are too expensive. Also considering the fact that the device is going ot used as a sporting accessory.

Camcorder with illuminator could be a good option but I don't require recording.

Here is an idea- follow the "Events and Outings" thread where I am suggesting a meet here at my facility on either May 26-27 or Sept 1 &2, and you can spend half the night looking through both generations. I think you will agree that much Gen 1 stuff is just a blur and you cannot tell if something is a large cat or a small dog, but you know there is an animal there. And then you can make an informed decision as to what you think would work for you.
