Knives from Khukuri House Nepal

I stumbled across the Khukri House website www.thekhukurihouse.com

Has anyone imported knives from them? I wrote to them and received a reply that they ship to India but that I would have to clear the product with Customs. I am interested in the 6 inch Survival Knife and the 5 inch Churi.

Would be grateful if someone here could advise me how to clear customs from knife imports from Nepal. And if there are any legal issues in getting a 6 inch blade knife from Nepal to India by courier. I have read here that only knives with a blade longer than 9 inches or a width of 2 inches wide are illegal in India. So, hopefully this should not be a problem?

For all knife lovers here please have a look at the Churi and the Survival Knife in the site. They look awesome. In case anyone has these knives from Khukuri House, please let me have your comments.

Hi Green Beret, Moin,

I called Khukhuri House in Nepal and they seemed a bit uninformed about the customs clearance in India. Also, I was looking for the 6 inch survival knife (not the khukhuri) that they told me was out of stock. Now, I have shelved this initiative for a bit. The compelling reasons is that I have other choices.

For my latest survival knives, I shall soon have an Aitor Jungle King 1 and a Ka Bar Becker Campanion. These two chaps will knock the wind out of the budget ....I also have a commitment to get some good blades from Mizoram. Some of the knife enthusiasts here will wonder why I have decided to go for the Jungle King. Just that, I fell in love with it. I might not use it much and it may be a hollow handle knife but there is something compelling about this knife.....it is my fondling knife

So...I will pursue Khukhuri House in June. Will keep you informed.

Do let them send you the invoice. With some luck all things produced in Nepal at the cottage industry level are (to the best of my knowledge) excempt from any customs duty. Request them to attach a letter stating that these are handicrafts from Nepal. Also do not cross the 9inch length. Getting them via a reputed courier may be better than by post. That's just my opinion. All the best.

Thanks Bruno. Will do that. In the interim, here is a picture of the Aitor Jungle King 1. The image quality is bad. But the blade is great ...Someday, I will learn to take pictures like you Bruno. The wristwatch is only there to give a context of scale.

The site & its products look good, if anyone has an experience in dealing with them or another similar shop, Himalayan Imports, we'd love to hear about them. I, for one, seem tempted seeing their wares & the prices inclusive of shipping look decent too.
Only matter of concern remains the delivery part, hope someone can shed some light on their experiences importing khukhuris as handicraft items (of legal length, as per Arms Act, of course).

I want to buy survival knife from khukri house.
But I am little bit scared as I mailed and them the relied me that is as follows
Thank you for the mail and im happy to inform you that it is possible to ship to India but since the custom of India is very strict so you will have to prepare import permission papers from the polie in order to provide the papers to the customs.
And I don't have any knowledge how to prepare import permission papers from the police for the customs.
I think its very lengthy process.
So, guide me how can I get it as I am from small town of bihar & for custom clearance I will have to go to the place where the parcel will come.

There are two such Kukri houses in 'Darjeeling' - Mall Road. They are made in Nepal; authentic kukries of all kinds, from 3 inch blades to 18 inch ones. I have bought a number of them for my showcase. This is the best time to visit Darjeeling.

I spoke to a gentleman at Khukuri House and he said he could send the stuff were I to take the risk of clearing it with Indian Customs (even for one with a blade length of 9 inches and below). Knives are not a problem but khukuris are. A Nepalese friend of mine said it can be brought back as a souvenir in the check-in baggage. Best option would be to bring it blunt with a certificate from the manufacturer that its a souvenir.

I am planning a Nepal Khukuri holiday. Nothing like going there and touching the stuff and basically behaving like a besotted lover Have a new job so it might take some time to land there....am planning the first or second weekend of August.
