If any of you chaps are in and around the London area, would love to meet up for a coffee and a chinwag.

I have just come off the phone to Westley Richards in Birmingham who have looked at the scans and they have no reason to believe that the gun has been restocked. That is their opinion.
Thank you all once again.
Very best
Steve.
steve

the reason i stated that is was a restock is because of the wood and a few flaws in the workmanship that dont belong on a best gun like yours, in retrospect i should have said refinished instead as it just as easyly might have been that, i will tell you what caught my eye, but please remember that i really adore your gun and do envy you quite a bit of the ownership.

the metal to wood fit is wrong, in that the metal is standing proud everywhere they meet, so that is proberly a refinish instead of a restock, if you look at the picture of the toptang(where you can see the toplever and safety) the checkering patteren is a bit flawed and unfinished and the end of the toptang has no contact with the wood.
the coloring of the wood is wrong for the time, this would have been a lot darker with a red thinge coming from the arkenet root they used in the linseed oil for the oil finish.

best regards

peter

Steve,

I'll second that I think the gun is a work of art and me or anyone would be proud to own anyday but I am still of the opinion that it is a restock.

Peter has some good points, though I would consider the end of the top tang area as evidence that it is not a restock, but could well have been refinished. Slightly proud metal in a gun that old could be the result of wood shrinkage. They had no means of measuring and precisely controlling moisture in those days.
IMO, fair possibility of having been refinished. But gorgeous.

Gentlemen, I totally understand how little things can make us ask questions, I also collect vintage wristwatches and trying to understand small details is all part of the learning curve of the "passion" we all share. I had the checkering redone and the barrels re-browned about 20 years ago when I had it nitro proofed, other than that, I have done nothing. Will we ever know the true history of what was done in the intervening years from 1880's until I took ownership.
I thank you ALL for your input.
Very best,
Steve.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.
