Re: New SMG for Indian Armed Forces
The Americans and most of the countries are replacing their 9X19 SMGs and Indians are just thinking of opting one. We are falling far behind in the arms race.

spin_drift I guess you didn't get his post completely. He was saying most Indians don't know about latest firearms like HK7. Anyway looking at current ammo prices MP7 ammo would cost around 600 per round. I guess it would be more taxes if our government uses them

What could be wrong with the almighty H&K MP5? Other than the fact that the Mx4 has a slightly longer barrel, both spit out the same unremarkable KF 9mmX19mm ... the MP5 has been around longer and is a proven piece of kit. The fools are just compounding the logistics problems.
The Mx4 is hideous in my book.

Re: New SMG for Indian Armed Forces
Whenever armed forces have asked for new equipment, the babus have convinced the government that they will be able to meet the requirements with indian made products. In order to promote indiginisation the government decides to give contract to indian PSUs (HAL, DRDO, NAL, Ordinance Factories. etc). The problem comes when after obtaining the contract, these companies start the R&D for the product. They spend so much time in R&D that by the time the product is finalised on the drawing board it is obsolete. Thereafter you can imagine the time taken to actually make the product.

Re: New SMG for Indian Armed Forces
MP5 is nice but can it penetrate Type III or IV armor or the Dragon Skin? American forces are replacing their 9X19s due to increased use and quality of body armor which makes the good ol' 9mm obsolete but in India where body armor is rare, MP5 will do its job nicely I think.

Re: New SMG for Indian Armed Forces
The Russian military has developed specialized 9x19mm cartridges that utilize relatively light bullets at high muzzle velocities for both pistols and submachine guns to defeat body armour.
Besides enhanced penetration capabilities these overpressure variants offer a flatter trajectory and lessened recoil. After initial research, conducted since the late 1980s under the codename "Grach", the Russian armed forces adopted two specialized 9x19mm variants

Priyan: Type III and Type IV armour can not normally be defeated by pistol calibers.
Type iii is resistant to the 7.62x51 and Type IV to the .30-06. Operative word being resistant.

Re: New SMG for Indian Armed Forces
Not that I'm a blind fan of the H&K MP5 but if its just a matter of procuring more 9mm SMGs for our forces why compound the logistics nightmare by adding another 9mm popper to our inventory? ...Incredibly half arsed.
It simply implies some establishment monkeys were dazzled at some recent defense expo... kickbacks probably did the rest.
Why the hell don't they simply revive production of the .45ACP at KF?... the useless buggers pulled the plug on the caliber in the early 80's...
regards,
cc

I think in the U.S. U can get these rounds- have seen discussions in some forums to ban availability-because these ahve been used to shoot at Police with armour vests.Priyan wrote:Are those Russian round available for the civilians? And could you provide more info on those rounds please.
