Regardng No Comments on Sale Prices

Post by hvj1 » Wed Mar 09, 2011 10:39 am

Dear Moderaters,

I am quite sure, that with all your combined experience and wisdom, the rule for NOT commenting on Sale Prices has been established.

HOWEVER, often times than not, some people (NOT ALL), do post prices on arms and accessories at such RIDICULOUS prices, which warrants an outright swift response. I can certainly understand that this can very easily detiorate into a slanging match. On the other hand, if not commented upon, these people and others of their kind MAY be encouraged to incorrectly think, that ANYTHING goes.

There are a great many experts/ arms dealers on this forum, who deal at reasonable prices (in the Indian context) or are very much in the know, regarding prevailing prices. IMHO that such people may be allowed to comment on cases where the seller is demanding an unrealistic price.

This will ensure that readers/members will learn what the CORRECT prevailing price should be and most importantly reign in these fellows with crazy prices.

To take a case in point- recently a handgun was offered and claimed to be a masterpiece for which a price of Rs6.5 lacs was asked, quite a lot of people commented obliquely, Again IMHO, that discussion (healthy one) may be permitted so that the seller would realize that what he is asking for is too optimistic. At the same time others would learn from the discussion too.

Please do give it a thought.
Best Regards

:agree:
As I've discussed privately with some mods before, there is a danger of IFG inadvertently contributing to the artificial inflation of gun prices in India, unless some sort of check is kept. After all, this is first and foremost, a forum for hobbyists, not businessmen

I AGREE......

Might I also add that these inflated prices help create a perception that shooting is only for the rich......which is not necessarily so.....

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Actually it was 7.5 L if I remember correctly  . The thread has been trashed now .

I agree that people who are very much in the know, regarding prevailing prices may be allowed to comment on cases where the seller is demanding an unrealistic price but expecting A/A dealers to comment on one another's price might start a brawl here . :)

A great idea none the less and thank you hvj1 for bringing it up.

I think that as it's a free market, comments on price should only be made in the open forum by people who may offer that similar product at a better cost or in a better condition. That way one can justify the cost without affecting the buyer or the seller.
If a buyer has a doubt I am sure he can PM a few senior members and ask them if the price is correct or basically their opinion on the product. I am sure many seniors would be happy to help and also have a wealth of knowledge to share. That way we avoid a brawl regarding price on the forum.
I would also like to make one suggestion to all sellers. It is nice to give full details of the product they want to sell. Also to provide links to the original manufacturer and also reviews of the same product if available on the net. That way a sale thread also becomes very informative. It gives exposures to members new and old alike and keeps in the spirit of being a forum for enthusiasts rather than a commercial market place.
happy buying and selling

There can be a trial run taken initially if the mods are ok with it. In case of any mudslinging happens, We can back off and stick with the current policy.

Since no comments are allowed on prices of products, it might be a good idea for all buyers in this forum, to post a note on what they purchased, from whom, the year of manufacture, the overall condition, accessories etc. This will create a glossary of products, its authenticity and its price range. The mods may then, post a price range for every such product. For example a Diana 54 Airking in .22 should be in the range of Rs 56000 to Rs 62000. This will help all enthusiasts and hobbyists to get a reference point for a product price. It will also help the community ask a seller the reason for deviation of price, through a pm. There might be a very good reason for a higher price....extra accessories or a collectors piece.

i feel that this site has either been taken over by a few greedy dealers or else the owners of this site are sleeping or hands in gloves with them. may Gog help this site or have mercy on us.

bruno22 and slingshot, looking at the post count of most buyers and sellers on the site, I daresay written contributions are not their forte.

I agree with HVJ, just to put it on record. I may here mention that I have been warned once for commenting on a blank firer on sale for 90K or 1 Lac or so, but my comments below are general in nature, and not linked to the warning.

My views are that one gets so many excellent information on ALL aspects of shooting and guns, knives, gunsmithing (I even got better advice on buying a camera here than on camera sites!), but when it comes to the price, it is pure caveat emptor. Apart from some general discussions on the "artificial inflation of arms prices", there is not much concrete information (except on prices of IOF stuff, IHP airguns and similar "common" items). There are people here who ONLY post in sales sections, and who do overprice (sometimes highly) their wares. Unfortunately, the novices cannot find any info on the site, whether the price is fair or not!

If I find a post, selling an IHP airgun for, say 20K, and I find a comment below it from a long-time, respected member, saying basically that this seems too high, I have been saved about 12000 of my hard-earned income! PM-ing senior members might not be a very easy decision for novices, esp when we do not have access to members' list!

I sincerely believe that when we discuss on the artificial inflation in arms prices, on the non-availability of quality arms, et al, we also should ACTIVELY discourage overpricing by ourselves. It is Indians For Guns, a forum for fighting for the right of all Indians to own guns, and not only rich Indians.

Regards,

EssDee
Cheers!

I agree with most people here, I infact got a warning along with essdee1972 for commenting on the price of a airsoft gun and my intention was not to start a mudslinging competition. I only hope that people do not use two or three id's to create artifical demand and high prices, vice versa. Unfortunately some people use only the sale section of the forum.

If they did/do, I am quite sure the mods certainly know how detect and prevent that.....
