The Leopard's Party - Warning Graphic

Post by kragiesardar » Thu Feb 10, 2011 7:40 am

Those of you that read the summary of our hunt in RSA wherein we had come across leopard spoor.

Clayton had set up a game camera where we cut the spoor and recently sent out pictures that captured some interesting pictures of the leopard in its lair, throwing a party where the guest was eaten and there were gate crashers.

Wow. What snaps Singh.
Leopards often carry their kill up a tree to prevent "gate crashers" from taking a bite.
This one is well hidden by the thick undergrowth. Secondly he must have had his fill and would not have bothered about the left overs.
A relative once recalls seeing eaten and dried carcasses hanging upside down on trees in the jungles of the Terai , as perfectly placed as a lady would put out wet clothes inthe sun to dry.
Undoubtedly the work of a leopard.
What antelope is that ?

Hi Prashant,
Email said it was an impala, hard to tell from the pictures. Seems the bush pig scared away the leopard. Interesting background on the Terai, which year was that?

The horns did look like an Impala . Probably a young buck.......But the white line running along the nose made me wonder if it were a Blessbok.

The story I narrated was sometime in the early 1960's .The leopard was a cattle lifter which was later shot.
You will be surprised at their power. They can easily lift animals heavier than their own body weight up a tree.

nice pics.

camra shows the date as 2008. :?:

i too am wondering about bontebok/blesbok nose.

leopards can hang animals up and tie a 'knot' sometimes to prevent them from falling.

(knot:entangle limbs with branch)

a leopard can lift amazing weights. pound for pound, its one of the strongest predators.

Clayton, our PH, bought a new game camera when I met him at SCI, not sure if this was taken with that or the ones he had earlier. Most probably he never adjusted the date on the gamecam. Kind of looks like a blesbok to me also but Clayton's wife Debbie mentioned impala on her email.
Nevertheless kind of spooky that the kids hunted where this animal rules.

Plese look at the depth and colour. The foreground is correctly exposed with adequate light. But background seems overexposed. When flash is being used in this type of situation, the background appears always under exposed because the intensity of flash falls gradually with distance.

I m sure these photos may have taken by a night vision camera which works on infra red imaging technique. The camera takes snaps continue at a predecided intervel or shoots just when some movement or sound happens.

Most of night vision camera converts the image signals into B&W photos. No doubt there are colour nightvision cameras also available nowadays but are much...much expensive.
