Holy Cow! Eight yards from the caller? My drawers would have been full.
Very impressive animal, indeed!

Amit 357 , 270 is a good gun, you can shoot the bear with that no problum , shoot him in the head, if i am in your place, sure i well shoot him

Baljit[/quote]

Hi Baljit, shot two in 1976-77 along with a brace of other stuff with the 270,today i wont shoot them here for anything, just got 6 lil Beary's in 250 Sq.Kms of human habitation, the 270 or the shotty is just for self protection,i.e if things do get a lil hot and its between me and Beary, then Beary goes, either with 270 or shooty. :D , Best Amit
PS; Planning a trip to your place this fall, lets see how them Beary are there.

Hi Shooter, permits for Bears were given till 1978 in H.P,for wild boar, blue bull and jungle fowl in the Tri State { PB, HRY,H.P) Area till 1990-91, for Wild Boar Punjab had started again,so had in H P,but in H.P they gave permits for monkeys also, which raised a lot of hue and cry,now H.P is closed
Baljit i am in India only  ,should have been there, thanks for your offer, will try and take you on it next spring,as far as the Rug goes, will leave it as a gift for you, cause if i try to get it to India, the CUSTOMS and RED TAPE will make a Rug out of me and hang it at the Delhi CUSTOMS Warehouse.
Shooter in J & K the wildlife protection act was enforced in the late 90s,before that all was fine there, people who had a little connection in J & K used to go there and have fun,Jehlum and Ravi near Madhopur was a shooter paradise for Winged Shooting and other 4 Legged Shooting,a true case of Federalism in India ROTFL

Thanks for the info.

whats even more impressive is that you shot bears with a 270 at the age 12-13.
I wish todays generation could learn from you. Ive seen strapping adults wince at the 270 recoil.
I always mantain that the older people were always more hardy.

Permits to shoot crop raiders, rouges and maneaters are issued (at times) by the Uttarakhand Forest Dept. as well. The animal once shot is destroyed (burnt).
Corbett shot his first Leopard at 12.
Here is an interesting story . I have a friend whose father, now in his 80's (as a kid) used to walk around with an Air Rifle(occassionally his fathers double barrel gun) on his farm, shooting birds. Once there was a cattle lifter which was troubling the poor farmers in the area. It was a decent sized male leopard. The farmers approached this young boy (aged 12) and asked him to free them of the menace.
His father was away so our man took his fathers 12 bore and went with the villagers. They put him on top of a hut where he waited. At dusk the Leopard came . All the previous kills within the village had made him bold. He was fearless and growled as he approached the enclosure (unlike a cunning leopard) where the goats and sheep were kept for the night. When the animal was climbing the fence , and was just about 20 yards, uncle took aim and fired. The animal jumped in the air and screamed with pain. The sound was so loud that our man dropped the gun and jumped from the thached roof on to the other side and ran. Didn't stop to look back.
On hearing the gun fire the villagers (armed with lathees and torches) carefully approached the enclosure. The leopard was found.... dead ...shot through the neck.
Quite a hero the young boy became amongst the locals.
He never looked back after that. Still has a fantastic collection of trophies shot in the Terai and the jungles of M.P.

Hi Shooter,i was using Big bores since the age of 10,1974,shot 22s and 12 Bore semi since 1973,270 and the 22 Hornet was my favorite, fortunately for me, my Dad was the D C,( he was from the famed ICS  ), we had a brace of guns from the 22s to the 577,
Prashtnt,i shot my first leopard at the age of 14,over a salt lick at Dist Mahendergarh,it was a cattle lifter, saw a Tiger being shot over a salt lick at the age of 11, a Man Killer ( not a Maneater),still wake up with goosy's when i remember how it roared when hit by a 375 Mag.,life was good those days LG :D,now its just make do .
Baljit i am at Chail-Kufri road, near Koti ,near Blossom, (Chail) and Rajgarh in Himanchal, and near Chandigarh in the plains

@ Baljit, Prashanthsingh, Amit357 - Amazing incidents - all involving plucky young lads; warms the cockles of my heart! I guess it was all because there was no bottled mineral water available those days!

@ shooter - sorry, didn't get the drift of your question, what original series were you referring to?
