a correction Ajit= loyan
tendua = beedi

Paan is betel leaf; tendu is a leaf from a variety of ebony tree.

Timmy - reminds me of my visits south of the Vindhyas

Hamicalr01 - wide eyed tubby non-PC say your mind, actually I quite liked the previous one - a pity it got "pinched" by someone

grewal - better watch out, this tiger is not just all roar - he has some big teeth and ain't shy to show them! ;)

BTW - slightly OT but this thread reminds me of a class exercise we did once. The subject was organisational behaviour and our prof had each one of us write out the name and what he/ she thought of one of his/ her classmates on the chit, fold it and drop it into a box. Everyone was given 4 or 5 chits (I forget the exact number)... you were then handed the anonymous notes describing what a fellow classmate thought of you and were to read each one of these aloud in class.

Needless to say, it was a rather entertaining session - at least for those who didn't believe in taking themselves too seriously  For the others, I think it may have been a bit more than they were prepared to handle... ;)

Cheers!

My avatar is a cropped section of the logo of a rock and roll band called the Leningrad Cowboys. I discovered them entirely by accident, and became a big fan.

The Cowboys were originally a fictional Soviet-era Russian musical group created by a Finnish film director. They appeared in a couple of short art films and then in the movie "Leningrad Cowboys Go America." After the movie was released, the Cowboys just kept on going... they've been performing for over 20 years now, often together with the Red Army Choir.

The Cowboys' trademarks are their giant pompadour hairstyles and their long pointed shoes. These were basically jokes in the films, but they were so recognizeable the Cowboys kept them when they went out on their own.

They mostly perform Russian folk music and 1960s rock and roll. The crazy thing is, they're very good, and their performances are excellent. The Cowboys by themselves are good, but when they're performing with the Red Army Choir they're positively surreal. The first video clip I saw of them was a performance of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama." You don't normally think of "Red Army" and "rock and roll" together, or "Red Army" and "fun."

Welcome to IFG, TRX. How about a small intro in the Introduction section??

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

I wonder how I missed this older post!

It was gratifying to see so many ardent fans of the wild west, Max Brand, Louis Lamour, Sudden, not to mention the analyses on the avatars. Made a good read - loved the humor! Hence now, my recent SUDDEN change of avatar.

I have collected and lost many books of these amazing authors a few times during my life. May favorite title from Max Brand being Thundermoon - of Louis Lamour, Oliver Strange & Frederick H. Christian - all the titles hold a special place!

As a kid my favorite toy was a beautiful, metal replica of hvj1's avatar!

It took me close to 45 mins to edit and avatar-ize this image in the correct size with effects. Hope I am not infringing on anyone's existing avatar!

Very pleased to meet fellow Wild Bunch-ers and Cowboys :D

Hope to see more posts about the wild west here!

Hello CKK
I was about to comment on your new avatar, then noticed that you have posted here. Happy to know that you are a fan of almost all the great Wild West writers. 'Sudden' by the way was how I first got on to reading about his exploits - James Green- the saturnine features and cold green eyes, who would appear to turn away, beofre drawing his guns- so fast that nobody could see it! Heck , I have read all his books, some of the titles which come to my mind are _ Sudden & The Range Robbers, Sudden Outlawed, Sudden and the Law of the Lariat, Sudden Rides Again..... For quite some time I believed, that its impossible to draw that fast and shoot accurately, till I came across a post on this forum (I forget the title), where a modern day cowbody, who happens to hold the world record on speed of draw, demonstrates on video, how it CAN be done, not once, not twice but with easy regularity.
I have not had the opportunity to read Max Brand's Thundermoon, but I have almost read each of Louis Lamour's books, at least three times!
Best Regards

hvj1: My Wife, my older son, and my Dad are/were huge Louis L'Amour readers. There are piles of paperbacks still in a number of the corners here, even though the kids have left many years ago and Dad isn't with us anymore. Incidentally, L'Amour was said to have been a pro boxer, but I never was able to find his record on www.boxrec.com although I have tried several times.

For myself, I'm not a huge fiction reader at all, however I do love cinema and one of my great favorites is The Wild Bunch. Actually, I love many western movies and have many John Wayne films, including most of his "A" grade westerns.

Regarding the quick draw trick shooting, I do know that years ago, Bob Munden would scour many of the gun shops in Western Montana looking for Rugers that he would trick over for his demonstrations and practice. Seems that even Rugers wore pretty fast under that kind of duty!

It seems that there are many of us L'Amour readers around. I think I have read most of his books and still have most of these with me.

Look up the fast draws at youtube and you will find many videos there. Amazing!

Hello Timmy, Rajat,
Glad to hear that Louis L'Amour fans span the globe. It is very very difficult to point out which of his novels is the best, since each has its own uniquness and charachter. Tell Sacket off course stands out, though I enjoyed his cousins exploits a bit more - Nolan Sackett the outlaw, as Louis L'amour himself would put it - 'theres just no give in him, if he comes after you, he will, come hell or highwater'.
My father and I really enjoyed -'A man called Noon'. Then off course there is Shalako, Catlow, Kilkenny, hell the list goes on and on till it spans almost all his books.
Best Regards

Hi hvj1,

Thanks for that update - 'yu shore do know yo westerns - pordner'. :D Maybe it would be an idea to post the list of books of these authors in an appropriate thread. I must agree with you that the best of the L'amour novels are about the Sackett family - my personal favorites! There are a few more longer ones that are very interesting and historically quite accurate, like the 'Walking Drum' and 'Jubal Sackett'.

I like Nolan Sackett too - the nice guy inside of that rough exterior! William Tell Sackett is my pet probably because he features in so many of the Sackett novels.

I am planning to do a write up on the Ferguson Rifle - that I got to know through one of Louis L'amour's novels by the same name. It sparked my curiosity and did some research on it. The weapon described was so much ahead of its time in the story. Sadly, the rifle was not much of a success later.

@ Timmy / Rajat: I am greasing the insides of my twin holsters right now
Apart from the sheer entertainment value, what I have learnt from L'amour's books are very true to life and he does convey a whole bunch of very down-to-earth impressions, observations from his own life which are valid and worth pondering - and I thought quite valuable.

All the very best to my fellow western fans - may their tribe increase!
