Other Gun Fora - Rejecting free email IDs!!

Posts that don't fit into any other category. If it's anything to do with guns, it probably doesn't belong here!

Other Gun Fora - Rejecting free email IDs!!

Post by essdee1972 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 6:10 pm

Hi, Folks,

Did anyone try to get membership of other (International) fora related to guns using Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. IDs? I tried on a couple (airgunforum.com, etc.) and got kicked out as I do not have a ISP provided mail ID. Going by the fact that most people in 3rd world have mail IDs provided by either employers or free mail (like Hotmail, etc.), isn't this a kind of "geographic exclusivity"? Understand that this is bot-proofing measure, but doesn't this seem too much of a solution to deal with what is at most an irritation, i.e. spam or viruses?

I felt like asking for membership to a Gymkhana or Golf Club (so, how many companies do you own?), instead of a simple web forum. :banghead:

Sorry if this post seems unrelated, will delete if so.

Cheers!

If you moderate a few posts here, you'll soon know why...

Besides spam, one more reason could be:

Many free e-mail services repeatedly reject e-mails from forums, which is an unworkable scenario from an administrator's point of view - as to function the forum software needs to (at the very least) send a (registration) confirmation & ID activation e-mail. Due to this, even at IFG we had to restrict rediffmail & indiatimes IDs as those two were rejecting all mails sent from the forum.

A solution to this? Well I guess if enough people using those e-mail services wrote to their individual tech support asking for the forum(s) in question to be removed from their blacklist...

Well, seems to be one of the many things we have to learn to live with. On the positive side, these fora which reject "anonymous" mail IDs, can give you memberships if you provide personal details like name, address, DoB, etc. (I just hope they do not take a leaf out of the passport guys and send a cop to check ).

A golf club membership does not seem that distant a deam any more :D (I hate the game, anyway).
