Mizo shooting team official held with ammo
New Delhi: The manager of the Mizoram shooting team was arrested at New Delhi railway station on Wednesday while leaving the capital with four shooters after the National Shooting Championship. Rohming Liama was arrested under the Arms Act for carrying ammunition illegally.
A joint team of RPF, GRP and crime branch arrested him after he was stopped near the door-frame metal detector at the main entrance.
“He was entering the platform but refused to keep his bag in the X-Ray scanner. He also refused to hand it over,” an officer said. The baggage contained 1,020 rounds of .22 bore cartridges. Team manager detained, sent to judicial custody
New Delhi: Their suspicion aroused, the security personnel detained him and checked the bag from which 1020 rounds of .22 bore sophisticated cartridges were recovered.
The accused was produced in court which sent him to judicial custody.
“When we asked him to provide us with the necessary National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) cash memo and licence documents, he failed to do so. The other shooters were later allowed to proceed to Guwahati,’’ said a senior crime branch officer. Sources in the Railways however said the shooters too were questioned and allowed to leave only after the security agencies cleared them. Northern Railway made alternative arrangements for them. The IB, special cell and the special branch of Delhi Police have been informed about the arrest.
NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia told TOI he was clueless about the development. “As far as we are concerned, we have not provided any .22 bore cartridges. We are yet to recognize the Mizoram shooting association. Their shooters had expressed their desire to compete here and we gave them four slots after they qualified by participating in a zonal event in Guwahati. It is indeed sad that the sport which is bringing laurels for the country is receiving a bad name even when the shooters gave their best in the just-concluded championship,’’ he lamented.
The team had arrived in the capital on January 10 and competed in the event that took place from January 14 to January 24 at Karni Singh shooting range near Tughlaqabad. The team was taking the Rajdhani to Guwahati.
Sources in the crime branch said Liama has claimed to be a manager with the Mizoram Rifles Club too. “He claimed he had bought the cartridges on behalf of his association from a Manipur Rifle Association member. So far, we have found all documents of the Manipur contingent to be in order. We are investigating the sequence of events and verifying his claims,’’ said a senior crime branch officer. Bhatia said they had issued cash memos to the Manipur team contingent when they produced the association’s licence and those of the individual shooters.

What a load of BS, "sophisticated" ! And pray what do these rounds do ? They can be shot without a rifle I presume and are laser guided. Goddamn Horsesh1t (Pardon my French) but this just takes the cake.1020 rounds of .22 bore sophisticated cartridges were recovered.

Re: Mizo shooting team official held with ammo
To be fair, if he was carrying the ammo without valid documents, he is toasted. But, why was he carrying the ammo? Why was it only .22lr?Was he carrying the ammo for the shooters to compete with and practice with? I would be sympathetic if he was forced to carry that ammo to help the team but paper work/rules complicated the issue or something similar.

Re: Mizo shooting team official held with ammo
Poor chap I bet he couldnt resist the free availability of "sophisticated" .22 ammo with some fellow shooters. This just brings to light the kind of situation sports shooters are in, in the country. We are expected to perform despite the sword of damocles (read Arms act) hanging over our heads.
Mizoram Rifle Association is a fledging association and I being one of the founder members am very much agitated by this news. On the brighter side, 4 out of our five shooters qualified and participated at the nationals this year for the very first time. (we only have 5 competition airrifles in the state). This is very bad news for us and I hope NRAI does not review our temporary affiliation negatively.
Ngrewal, thanks a lot for your positive comments and I am at present keeping my fingers crossed.

What ever the story is behind the issue, one thing that comes to mind almost immediately, is that of a doddering, inept establishment desperately trying make its ridiculous dim-witted regulations as seen to be "working"...with the component standard sexing-up of 'facts' with lame exaggerations by rank amateurs.
Stupid establishment.

Jonah, as I wrote early, if he was carrying the ammo to help the team or the shooting association, I understand. But, why was he carrying it and without any papers? I hope I do not sound unsympathetic for I am not. Thanks.

Re: Mizo shooting team official held with ammo
Probably because they have not been "recognised" as yet, so he/ they must have had to "scrounge" ammo from other shooters/ associations at the competitions. I imagine that this would have been without paperwork and without any profit attached, done simply as a way to help out fellow shooter(s).Vikram wrote:Jonah, as I wrote early, if he was carrying the ammo to help the team or the shooting association, I understand. Unfortunate state of affairs this, criminal & terrorists roam large, while sportsmen & enthusiasts who are being victimised. To top it all, the NRAI seems to have washed it's hands of, by squarely blaming these upcoming sportspersons/ enthusiasts for what would have never come about if the NRAI was able to provide the state association with their requirements of target grade ammo.
But this will continue, till such time as we allow the government to "dole out" favours in stead of demanding from them our natural rights. Till such time, the government will continue to force honest law abiding folk to bend/ break rules/ laws and make criminals where none would have existed.

Re: Mizo shooting team official held with ammo
When the news of this 'sophisticated' roundup gets going in the International Media, I hope the NRAI and Indian shooting gets struck off the ISSF member list. On the one hand it cant provide for its shooters who consistently do well on their own and on the other it just looks for scapegoats.
Anyway, the world is watching.

1.Carrying ammo without a license .
2.Doing it in Delhi on 26th Jan .
3.Had he just kept the bag in the x ray machine they would not have detected anything.
Stupidity compounded by more stupidity.
