Basics of Fishing rods

Post by Ranjeet Singh » Mon Feb 12, 2007 8:12 pm

I have absolutely no idea about fishing rods, could someone be kind enough to let me know
1) what should I look for, when I am buying a fishing rod? - any brands, in particular?
2) I assume like all things in life, the fishing rod also depends on purpose- the purpose being - able to fish around bangalore and join the fishing trips with Mack The Knife.
3) what other things are required to start off..

Any pointers would be helpful

cheers
Ranjeet

Thanks for starting the thread Ranjeet. Will add a few of my questions to it.

Where could I pick a Shakepeare 3000 reel and a few hooks(8,9,10) in Bangalore?

Pran,

Try Olympic Sports for the hooks. You have mentioned the size but not the type of hook.

Best thing is to pick up the basic gear that he advises you, meet up with him and learn hands on.

Yup Ranjeet, I just put up the perfect theory...nothing like hands on with Mack The Knife.
As for the questions Ranjeet, you'll have to chill a while because I am grossly involved in 'circumventing the mahseer ' and 'The Rod in india' awesome books-I can probably answer on how to catch socks, gunny sacks, glow-in-the -dark catfish -how to fish in drains-Fire away mate!:)

Well Mack The Knife, I'll take eljefe's advice and pick some basic gear..all the tapers and strength and material used, overwheel spinners and underwheel has gotten me completely confused.

I rephrase my question, well, I would also like to try fishing and need some basic gear before I get read the whole wikipedia on fishing equipment...and man!! there's an ocean of it..please let me know what basic stuff I need to catch some old socks....and sometimes a fish

regards
Ranjeet

Okay, will draw up a list later in the day. Will you be buying only in Germany or would you consider ordering from the U.S.?

I ask because Germany may be expensive though I am not sure what the prices would come to after shipping charges and duty.
