Barasingha shotgun.

Post by shooter » Sat Jan 08, 2011 1:57 am

Long tome ago there was a thread here re: barasingha shotguns and their origin.

Recently came across another one on sale here in the UK.

A decent gun at a reasonable price.

The Link is for a beretta Dev.

Viks, Grumpy and I came across a Barasingha at Bedford. Cheap and cheerful!

If I am not mistaken the Barasingha is a species of deer found in India. The name comes from the antlers. Literally : Barah (12 in Hindi) + Singha (seengh or antler wallah as these branch out and have more than 10 tines). This is because the most striking feature of this deer species is its Antlers.

Barasingha/Swamp Deer is a species of deer, native to India and Nepal which were brought to USA almost 100 years ago for sport hunting. I guess the name "barasingha" is not just limited to India/Nepal .

A little Out of Text.
The snaps on wikipedia do NO justice to the magnificent antlers of the Barasingha.
Putting up a couple of snaps .
One taken by a friend in Kanha. M.P.. A beautiful stag (backside) in it's natural habitat (swamp).
The other shot more than 70 yrs ago in the Terai. U.P..

I am not surprised why the "firangs" named their gun after this Indian deer.

Niice stag; nice trophy.

Dr. Jaikumar, as rajat has rightly pointed, barasings means 12 antlers not 12 lions. (the spelling is a misnomer; should have been something like baraseenga).
The indian swamp deer.

Please note that in the whole world, India has the maximum no. of native deer species.
Swampdeer is just one of them. These used to be plentiful in the terai and then the construction of the dam wiped out 70% population overnight!!

Another feather in industrialisation, rising and shining.

In the olden days, when hunting was legal in India . A number of hunters from Europe (including Italy) and America came to India for Shikar. I am quite sure that the guy who named this gun had bagged a Barasingha in one of his hunting trips to the sub continent.
India has a fantastic collection of native deer species like the Sambhar,Barasingha, Cheetal,Barking deer(Kakar), Hog Deer (Paara) Manipur Brow Antlered deer, and Hangul (Kashmir Red Deer) apart from an equal number of Antelopes.

Kastoori Mrigh.
Though rare and found in the high ranges of the Himalayas. It is probably amongst the most precious and endangered deer species in the world.
How could I forget it, "Shooters"?
It's also the state animal of Uttarakhand.
