Re: Artificial Inflation of Guns and Ammo in India.
this is a noble idea, but i personally feel that we ourselves are responsible for this, even we as individuals can't resist temptations while we sell our personal weapons of foreign make at exorbitant prices, and we indians always have cravings for foreign equipments, though i don't deny that they are no-doubt good but people are taking us for a ride due to this weakness,my piece of advice 'self control' is the best way to handle it.

I suppose trying to squeeze in as much profit as one can, forgetting the future, is a peculiar Indian mentality.
Look at the artificially inflated prices of property. Then look at the exorbitantly priced PCPs people have advertised at our own forum. How similar
I think we have to heal our own attitude of making a quick buck on everything.

Re: Artificial Inflation of Guns and Ammo in India.
The government has given a BIG GUN to the sellers, in the form of the (self-edited) laws. In conditions of artificially or statutorily created scarcity, the prices will definitely jump. The price-quality relationship will go for a toss. Remember how desperate people would be for a lousy Bajaj scooter, in the 70's, 5 years waiting lists and all? And our "best" (rather only) cars used to be the rejected-all-over-the-world Ambassador and Padmini?
This kind of scarcity leads to the creation of unofficial sources of supply, as the "legitimate" source is either non-existent, or too little to satisfy the actual demand.
The sellers WILL go for the kill. I will, you will, so will ALL of the world (the percentage of real do-gooders being lost as a rounding-off error). Being Indian or not does not have any bearing on this. American, British, and other soldiers used to barter tinned food for sex (and other things) when they were occupying Germany post-WW2. The Mafia in the US came to real power thanks to the prohibition.... ad nauseum. This is the nature of the seller. The buyer who complaints of high prices today, will happily quote something exorbitant if he is selling something.
The real cause of all this (self-edited) is the utter imbecility of goverments, who try to be what we call in Hindi maai-baap sarkar, and like all "good" parents, try to safeguard their kid (i.e. the general public) from the "evils" of drinking, smoking, keeping guns, etc. They define what is "evil" and then, allow all kinds of really evil individuals to get control of the process. They ration alcohol, sugar, guns, 2G licenses, contracts, tenders, etc. and in the process some (self-edited) individuals get the cake and eat it too.
NAGRI cannot to anything at least directly, but we can, by adding our numbers to NAGRI and other fora to remove inequities in the markets - whether markets for guns, cars, 3G licenses, or others.
Cheers!

Very well said,Esdee.
Gajamacho, it's not that we are happy with the way the prices are.As so many said so eloquently and precisely, what you are asking is the almost impossible. Demand & Supply. Firearms are not an exception to this. They are a subset of the larger market.

Gaja,
The firearms scene apart, entry into Target Shooting as sport is still possible in India, with some ease.
IHP makes some decent .177 cal airguns and good dealers like Aimco sell them at very fair prices.
In case one discovers that he or she needs to upgrade or get further and deeper, duty free importing of an airgun as a member of a registered rifle club is the way to go.
It also forms a good base to enter into firearms category target shooting (.22LR 50mtr 3P, Prone, big bore, 25mtr and 50mtr pistol)

Lately i have noticed that anything from Air guns to firearms to cartridges/pellets and accesories are being sold at Exhorbitant prices and some unscrupulous elements ( dealers) are taking advantage of this forum.
I think we guys should teach these Edited dealears a lesson and boycott all their products and inflated prices.
1/ Lets help make this sport affordable to all Indians..
2/ Please order your stuff after making enquiries Online ( internet) and learn the Import procedures and cost.
There has to be a solution to this Madness .
Guys, remember that if we inflate the market, its going to be bad for all of us.
let us support Genuine dealers and suppliers also by giving them our business.
regards.
Gaja

Re: Artificial Inflation of Guns and Ammo in India.
hi guys.
first of all let me tell you i am not a dealer but i am a gun lover.we are talking about dealers charging exorbitant prices for imported guns etc.first of all i want to ask a question to all those people who own imported fire arms.the price they paid for their firearm three years back has almost increased by almost 50% to 70% ,would they be willing to sell those arms at the old prices?secondly the ban on import of firearms has created a situation where the firearms which are pre ban imports are being sold and resold at higher prices year after year.the bond that u cannot sell your iof for 5 years have again jacked up the price of iof products ,adding fuel to the fire is the waiting period for these arms.but why do we blame dealers ,they are selling what we are buying and at the prices we are willing to pay.if a .32 hand gun is 5 lacs ,it is because someone is willing to pay that amount.why fret and fume.how many people will sell their fire arms at well below what they can get from the dealers ,i guess noone. hence instead of shifting the blame on someone there should be something done in the direction so as there could be a political will that the ban should be lifted...as far as i think it is highly unlikely cause the biggest loser would be the govt only, because after that nobody is going to give them the price they have been asking for the junk they churn out of those factories.

Re: Artificial Inflation of Guns and Ammo in India.
I agree, hardly anyone has ever made a meaningful attempt in this direction till now. But there are people working on this, we should organize properly and help those who are willing to move forward: http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 72&start=0 and http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 53&start=0instead of shifting the blame on someone there should be something done in the direction so as there could be a political will that the ban should be lifted
I feel that part of the problem is also the miserable lack of awareness among people that the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is a natural right, a human right and a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution's Articles 19 and 21. On the contrary most of the people feel that keeping arms is not a matter of right but some kind of privilege "granted" to them by government. Because of this government has over the years cleverly ensured that gradually the number of firearm owners decrease every year by ensuring the cost and difficulty of obtaining legal firearms is made well beyond the reach of common people:
1) By placing firearms on restricted list of import policy so that people are not able to import cheaper firearms.
2) Not allowing the private sector to participate in production of handguns and rifles. Hence IOF is free to price its firearms as high as possible. Even for shotgun manufacturing hardly any new license is issued in private sector.
3) Making the process of obtaining arms license so cumbersome, difficult and time consuming, further aided by corruption that most of the people avoid going through the hassles and harassment. If one reads the following judgment of High Court (http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 32&start=0), it took almost 14 years for the arms license applicant to get to some point near obtaining an arms license. How many people have so much tenacity to go through such hardships for obtaining arms license?

Re: Artificial Inflation of Guns and Ammo in India.
Veeveeaar: There is no such thing as an "Expiration Date" for ammunition. You are not going to find "Best if used before X-X-X", or "Discard After X-X-X" on a box of ammo. It's not a carton of milk. Ammo may be perfectly good after fifty years, or start to give some misfires after 10-20 years. Storage conditions have a lot to do with. I have powders that date to WWII that are still perfectly good, and had powders I had to discard after thirty years. Primers usually fail first.
Now, I'm sure some government chemist could come up with a priming compound with a lifespan, of say, three years. Than those who want to see an expiration date could be satisfied.
In a free enterprise system, where price of a commodity is not controlled by the government, you are unlikely to see adherence to an MRP. Only free competition will give you that. Or better.
A production date, though, would be good to see.

not at this stage i think. as more pressing issues at home needs to be dealt with ie MHA 2010 arms policy for one. but import ban will need to be taken care of at some stage.
