My First Bowie.. (if am correct its a BOWIE)

Post by prasanjit.baul » Thu Nov 11, 2010 4:38 pm

Dear IFGians....

I was passing through the Fort area of Mumbai... where on the D N Road there is a shop in the name of Royal Stamp Depot owned by Yusuf Lala.. this guy Yusuf sells all the antiques in his shop which is quite openly sold in the Footpath...

Along with antique coins n stamps... wat he keeps are sumthin astonishing... He has kept good amount of knives mainly bowies...

I pass along this shop evryday and i used to fantasise the Rambo III knife he had for sale... sumthin very tempting... He claims that the people who come on dock or dos in merchant navy normally bring it up and exchange for antiques..

Today while passing again through that shop i found out a Beautiful looking Bowie he kept on for sale... It had its own cover, A military color cover.... I took out the knife out and it was lyk WOW...

I made up my mind to buy it anyhow.... its quite heavy a good steel (as i felt, though i dont have enough knolwedge).. Then the next thing i did is i fixed up the deal and bought it....

After heavy searches on net i got the same knife which i have purchased... Kindly tell me how is it... what are its credentials.... for what purpose can i use it... and any info you would lyk to mention...

Thanks & Regards

Mine is Jungle King II....

From the appearance, it looks really good and dependable! :) You can use it for all reasonable purposes. For how much did he sell?

Ok buddy here you go:

The knife is from the company: Aitor and it can be the model Oso Negro

It is not a true blue Bowie. The tip may look a bit similar but no its not a Bowie in the conventional sense.

The blade style is called a "recurve". Belly towards the tip and slims down towards the handle.

The blade length is about 7" with a black coating non reflective as can be seen on many "tactical" knives these days.

The steel is a fairly decent type X43 / Inox 46 Cr13

The back of the blade is a decent saw with double teeth

Suggested usage: playing (for adults), survival (sounds good), camping & trekking, in the kitchen maybe :D etc.

Retails in $ 68 add to this customs + shipping

Sheath material: Thermo plastic with nylon straps.

All in all a decent knife.

Great Buy buddy!

Does not matter if its a second hand. If its not damaged or broken it is still as good as ever. You may just need to sharpen it. Thats all.

Can you post a picture of the original knife that you have bought so we may get to see the beauty!

prasanjit

The string usually is 550 Paracord which, should be required, can be quite useful for a variety of survival uses like: for tying the knife to stick to make it a spear or for using the multiple strands inside to set up snares etc etc. I do not know what type of cord Aitor uses.

The small blade is what you already must have read on the link a " a skeletal gut-hook skinner"

The easiest way in India and without getting into any complexities:

Go to a person who sharpens kitchen knives, scissors etc. take another knife with you test sharpen it and if he does the job well ten hand over the Aitor.

Buy a carborundom stone from a local hardware store. It comes with one side in a coarser grit and the other side finer. Practice with another knife until you think you have got the hang of it and then proceed. Watch the knife sharpening videos on youtube for guidance.

If you purchased it for Rs. 1500 it is certainly fair price.
