You might get mixed opinions on the above statement.
The safest mode to bring scopes is by carrying the scope from abroad and packed inside your checked in baggage.
I have read several threads which say not to import scopes along with the rifle. Back in 2009 my rifle got detained for Pellets and later the shipment was released after confiscating the pellets, however the mounted scopes came home very safe
So its all about taking the risk with men in white

Re: is telescope on rifle banned in india
Customs in India will not clear an air rifle with the scope attached. However, a riflescope un-mounted and packed separately is like any other optical device (like a camera lens, or binoculors) and will be cleared. I dont know the "logic" behind this if any .
As far as I know there is however no prohibition on a riflescope being attached in India. It looks like another bureaucratic snafu designed to cause more inconvenience to the licensee.
Regards,
Anand

I agree with Anand. It is more of a bureaucratic self styled, high handedness by customs than any law. Hence it is best to import rifle-scopes and guns separately unless you are well prepared to drag the customs to court in order to get your imports released.

There is a notification to the effect that as the licenses are presently for self defense purpose only Sniper equipment is not allowed on firearms for civilians. Thus any optical device that enhances the long distance accuracy is banned

Can you please post the details of that notification. It appears we are not been ruled by a democratic government but by some form of colonial government.

Who can even think that we have a democratic GOVT. ?goodboy_mentor wrote:Can you please post the details of that notification. It appears we are not been ruled by a democratic government but by some form of colonial government.
Brit's left our country in 1947 due to their own reasons, but they left 2 blood sucking, mind pulling institutions to keep us busy ....
1. Bureaucrats, ( IAS,IFS, still they have unlimited powers which were originally meant to rule a country, there is no clear provision in the law to change them or un power them )
2. Indian National Congress ( Mr. M.K. Gandhi suggested to desolve INC as its primary goal was achieved ... but 50 years of independence were ruled by it)
Please let me know if I am wrong ...... critics are welcome

manicks, since we are on a pedantic trail here, what about a muzzle loader or a shotgun or a handgun ? rifle scopes? smooth bore air gun with an optical device?
I know many online shops base their search on 'riflescopes ' for weapon mounted telescopes,to differentiate from astronomy telescopes
