What if I ask someone coming from abroad to bring a knife along, can knife be brought in baggage from abroad? If yes, this can pass customs without duty.
Technically speaking it can be brought by anyone in their checked in baggage without any problems and without any duties if the person bringing it carries it in his suitcase without a box and says its for "personal" use. There are no rules on the basis of which they may disallow or confiscate it if it is a knife with a blade shorter than 9" and not wider than 2".

Avoid switchblades as these are likely to attract undue attention. But from what I can make out you want a fixed blade and this will be fine.

That should do the job, some friends are coming in Dec. from U.S. I will ask them to to get one of the good knives suggested here.

.32, if you want fixed blade for EDC then consider horizontal carry, my absolute favorite would be Extrema Ratio SHRAPNEL both horizontal and vertical carry easy concealable under T shirt, cost some but best of the best.

Another choice is the Cold Steel SRK. For half the price you can get an equally good knife. Very sturdy and good steel.

Subal, so that's in my reach. Will try to get one.
Basically I used to like knives but as could never get good options locally, did not go in for one.
Then came Victorinox & I bought 2 Kirpans. Now, I don't intend to collect too many knives with me & become a collector but want just a few useful pieces that can come handy when needed.
Also, with the Gun ownership rights in India being challenged & Govt. making efforts to snatch weapons from Citizens, investing in good knifes make for a solid case.

Miss, that must be a good knife but somehow from the pics atleast, doesn;t look too inspiring! I mean look at the handle, its too plain jane(kitchen knife types)!

Yes that is why it was used by the US Marines for BUDS training.

Well, I also own an Extrema Ratio Shrapnel OG (without upper hilt / guard) Geocamo. The sheath is the new modified one and capable of multiple carry options.

Here are the pictures. A bit over exposed but I guess will still give you a fair idea of the knife.

Coming to the Cold Steel SRK: It looks simple but it is a good knife and at more than 10" it is a large knife.

Rajat i do not have Shrapnel, but perhaps will buy in future.

in general western people becoming more skilled in kali/escrima and silat and trend to have much shorter blades. Faster moves, difficult to disarm and more difficult defend against. 3" blade stab from the front will reach spine even in large size subject.

here is great DVD of what can be done with shorter blade, that Rick Hernandez gives perfect idea of what can be done, next would be to think how can you deal with it.

Subal: You misinterpreted my comment about the 10" blade and the SRK being a large knife. What I had said was that although in the picture the SRK appears to be a simple and plain knife but in fact it is a good knife capable of all tasks you put its way.

Personally I am in favor of blades which are not too long: somewhere in the range of 3 - 5 inches. Why else would I have purchased the Shrapnel? Although in some cases a longer blade is indispensable.

Rajat, that is a beauty. Extrema has some super designs. Thanks for the eye candy!!

Joining in a bit late lads, but I do tend to agree with Rajat and Subal that a shorter blade is much better. I do own a Geber LMF and a Recon Tanto but have never had the occasion to carry it. Just pride of possession. I carry around a Gerber 'Urban Companion' and the Spyderco Endura 4. These are much more practical than a large blade. Equally effective in a situation and don't attract too much attention in public.

Same here Bruno, Smaller folders are always better to EDC as you can put these to use when required and otherwise be discreet about it.

I did not interpret anything, since we were talking about fixed blade EDC, then of course carrying SRK is just like looking for troubles

Shrpapnel is just dream come true. You no need to know what is your best bet, Extrema already made it for you
