Source: NDTV

Two students were killed today and two others injured when the rifle of a security personnel went off accidentally during a weapon demonstration by the police in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh.

As part of the police commemoration week that began on October 15, police personnel were giving a demonstration of communication equipments and weapons to students at Velairpadu village in the district, when the incident occurred, police said.

The cop was giving a demo on loading and unloading the weapon, when it went off by mistake, killing a tenth and eight grade student identified as Venkatkrishna and Saibaba respectively.

Two other injured students were admitted to a government hospital at Khammam and the condition of one of them is said to be critical.

Regards

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

2 kids die as cop’s rifle goes off in demo

Khammam/Hyderabad, Oct. 20: In a bizarre accident, two schoolboys were killed and three others seriously injured when a police constable, while demonstrating his loaded carbine to the students, fired the weapon by mistake on Wednesday.

Police sources said that a single accidentally-fired shot from a carbine pierced two and injured three students. The two boys of the Zilla Parishat High School at Velairpadu who died were Class X student M. Venkatakrishna, 15, and Class VIII student P. Sai Babu, 13. The injured students are Navin Kumar, 12, P. Kishore, 11, and G. Naga Raju, 14. Venkatakrishna died immediately as he was shot through the heart and Sai Babu, shot in the stomach, died on the way to the hospital. While Navin Kumar was injured in the face, Kishore and Naga Raju suffered injuries on the leg.

The incident occurred while weapons were being shown to the students during an Open House organised by the police on the occasion of Police Martyrs Week. The aim of the ‘Open House’ programme was to educate school students about the duties and responsibilities of the police.

The director general of police, Mr K. Aravinda Rao, said that a criminal case had been booked against the police constable, APSP Sixth battalion’s M. Srinivas, for his negligence and over-enthusiastic act that lead to the incident. Disciplinary action has also been initiated against Srinivas. Mr Rao said the constable, who was guarding the police station, was not supposed to display the loaded weapon to the students. “As it is a Maoist-affected area, the weapons are always loaded,” he added.

Sad state of affairs indeed. Why show a loaded weapon?

Safety is the first casualty when one does not respect the weapon.

Very sad moment for the victims & their family....may god give strength to the relatives of the victims.

One should put "PIL" why Armed security personal are given very serious firepower with out proper training and safety regulations. MHA should be asked why security personals are given assault firepower which they rarely needs, I believe shotguns would be sufficient in place of even .303 or SLR.

In most of the developed countries, only highly trained sec. personals are given assault firepower, rest just haul around with less lethal weapons.

Let properly educated elite forces be equipped with modern weapons, general security personals dose not requires long range assault firepower,

I know they can give ans. like " it is not possible to modernization all the sec. personals due to budget issue, I'd say if our country can afford CWG event, we have enough budget to re-equip all the sec. personals several times with in that budget.

IF MHA is trying to dis-arm law abiding civil personals, they should evaluate the fire power, a class 2 policeman carries with him. What happens if some cop go mad in public with his SLR or SMG ? there would be much more causalities than this discussion,

Condolences dose not bring back the lives of victims, or reimburse the pain of the victims and their relatives.

We should raise a voice against the firepower carried by untrained, underpaid sec. personals

regards and again Condolences to the victims and their families of the miserable incidence.
