want to buy a good survival/hunter knife-help needed

Subal, I have great respect for your knowledge and value your advice but I have to disagree on this one.

I have used knifes usually for cutting, a few times for slashing and splitting but rarely (read almost never) for stabbing. In all of these uses a finger guard is not really required, in fact it becomes a hindrance and does not allow one to use a knife freely.

Coming to stabbing: I presume we will not be stabbing bricks or blocks of wood or even sand bags. One will only stab something with full force what one assumes his knife will penetrate with ease and for this the non slip Kraton textured rubber grip is good enough. For other jobs where one has to "stab" through something really tough I would recommend hammering the knife in with something suitable if possible.

This is the reason why I had earlier said that the H1 or similar knives are not the ones for beginners and neither would they choose these knives.

The H1 is basically a hunting and skinning knife and is well made for this work although it will be good enough for all other general use.

H1 is great knife indeed and no hand guard is a part of their traditional minimalistic approach in design I just don't like it and it is overpriced, it broke the same way as BK2. If you need minimalistic looking knife take track spring or file and you can make your self very minimalistic looking and very functional knife.

hand guard making a knife a weapon, in russia for example you will need hunting club membership card to buy one such knife and it's number will be entered into your hunting card. if you not planing to use knife as a weapon you can do perfectly well with knife without hand guard.

I like that one particularly because it is a trowing knife at the same time and it cost $29 only



this AR-15 and M16 bayonet looks a bit similar, but this type of blade been used in trench knives back to WW1

The Glock Field knife seems like a good buy at $ 26-30 since the picture shows its Made In Austria but you never know as companies always state that the specs etc. change from time to time and the actual product may differ slightly from the picture.

Good knife to Play with and brandish around, can be good for general field use and be put to rough use / play without hesitation considering the price.

The good old Ka Bar has similar specs: Both are Clip points, overall length of both knives is 11" with blades at approx. 6 1/2 to 7". Although Ka Bar weighs more by approx 4 ounces / 110 Gms and costs much more. The higher cost I guess as it is U.S made, has a great name, Leather handles and maybe better metal.

I do not really like the fact or want to own a knife that is Made in China. May be its how I think but it takes all the charm away and gives it the Cheap mass production, machine made tag. The Made in China tag is good for maybe computers, keyboards, plastic toys, etc. but not for Knives or Guns. Ok they are professionals and do their job well and can cater to all price segments but the fact still remains.

The cheap Chinese goods era is now coming to an end and they have their own problems related to production, salaries, manpower, withdrawn subsidies etc. Good for the quality manufacturers as they will be able to compete fairly now.

That the hand guard makes a knife a weapon: Once again I disagree, we do not need Russians to endorse our knives do we? Some of the best knives / weapons / hunting knives in the world are made without a hand guard.

Anyway in Russia it seems that they certify all knives and not just knives with hand guards. See below some typical examples:







India has its own share of problems so let us not get into this now.

Secondly, I do not really believe in all of these wacky tests, Spine whacking a folder to test the lock, chopping a piece of steel, prying etc. are not really tests to show the ability of a knife and you cannot compare knives by these tests and the designs and purpose may be altogether different. Although you if compare knives of the same caliber then you can get a fair idea of the extent of abuse these can stand.

This seems like a good way for all of us to learn a few new things!

some of those certificate say that knife is a civil arm, and others for folder and shorter knives it said it is not a civil arms, but sport tourism related item.

such certificate is not a bad thing at all, when buy knife you will get certificate and you can carry it with you, it can safe you from having problem with police. You cant buy knife with hand guard in Russia freely only from from gun dealers and you cant get such certificate for knife with hand guard they call it hunting knife.

I agree with the benefits of having a certificate but I think the 9" x 2" rule is good enough with India. With all of the Babugiri and other certificate issuing morons around in India who come up with strange interpretation of the rules, who wants to get involved in getting certificates for knives here.
