Dealers would be the first to deny issuing any foreign ammunition.

Scary!!! It means if I am not overseas return [with foreign ammo] & carrying my revolver with prohibited ammunition – I am guilty under the Arms Act for possession of illegal ammunition.

Upon any questioning of authorities, I should be prepared with a supportive explanation… which I fear, isn’t any… as far as I can think.

Vineet no A/A dealer has any import licence, they get 5 % of the business turnover, every finacial year as an incentive to import ammo.See the logic behind is that whatever the billing is done for they get 5 % of the same to import ammo,am sure if you go to an A/A dealer trying to purchase the 30 Mauser you have as your avtar you would be shelling out about Rs;3 Lacs, and the bill which you will get is for Rs 40 k.
We dont need to be thankful to anyone for S & B ammo, the guys work at a 300 % margin, its they who should be thankful to the laws of our land, wherein they sell Webley Scott .32 Revs for Rs 3.00 lacs i.e about US $ 6000,In US for 6 Ks you can fill up your car with quality weapons and ammo

If they can illegally import S&B , they can jolly well smuggle other better brands too and ask for both the arms and both the legs this time when they sell it  . Remember my friend the illegally imported stuff works out much much cheaper to the dealer, no duties are paid on the import either , so ( for the common calibers for example a .22LR ) if you compare the price of any particular ammo in dollars and to the price in rupees that the dealers ask for in India , you will see my point. One point that I wish to make here is that .32 S&W long is not a commonly shot ammo in the USA , they have better and cheaper calibers so its price relatively is higher in the USA .

Profit is the right of any shopkeeper , fleecing the customer is NOT ! Its actually "Gandhigiri" to thank someone immediately after he has ripped you off.

Any ammunition that is on the "import list of ammunition" is not the problem. There are some calibers that are not on the import list like .22LR, .32 ACP,.32 S&W L, 12 Bore, 30-06.
So if a dealer obtained them how did he??? Well the possibilities are endless  but he could have legally aqcuired them from a person who had originally imported these caliber on TR.
The question is will he be able to prove it by receipts etc.

I believe .30-06 ammo is on the import list, or at least it used to be...

My father was issued on permanent basis(on his purchase licence) an Arminius HW3(brand new complete with box, cleaning rod, instruction booklet) .32 S&W long revolver in 1989 for Rs.1200 with 25rds of GECO(German made) ammo @Rs.2 per pop!!Every year or so he goes down to Delhi to collect his quota 25 rds a year, now the cost is around Rs.5 per shot.My point is that these purchases are not always entered in the licence, but as has been pointed out the make is not mentioned.just last week as he was returning,at the airport he was questioned about the origin of the foreign ammo(this time it was entered in the licence and receipt was issued)! It works out so,that one arm of the government issues imported ammo(maybe it doesn't trust the IOF),the other tries to seize them!!
