Dear Sagar,
While I understand your scepticism re: the system,

I would like to point out that there has been a post here about the designer of IOF Mr. Anant nath.

He is a joiner by trade and was made the chief designer :!:

Not only that he has been decorated by the govt. of India for his 'original' designs and 'quality work' :!: :!:

Go figure.

Without fear? Really??!!! :D What if the IOF guys feel bad about it? (I did have a relative in FGF, Kanpur )
So..... here goes (repeating myself to some extent)..... when we lived with rejected-design cars and scooters for decades, when we still prefer to die of thirst rather than drink the municipal water, when the biggest public loo in the country is "nature", when shock-absorber damage rates as biggest contributor of car repairs (due to bad roads)........ etc. (ad infinitum), expecting a well-designed GUN, is well, best left for the dreams one has after partaking of certain illegal substances.
Per se, a joiner becoming chief designer (or a draftsman becoming chief engineer, a la PWD) is not bad, provided the joiner / draftsman has taken pains to learn the job, showed his capability, etc. But knowing the GoI, I expect the promotion was because the joiner / draftsman belonged to the same caste/religion/region as the Minister / Secretary / Honcho in charge of the deptt.
At least we have a forum here, where even people privileged enough to afford imported stuff, are actually advocating good, cheap guns for the masses. In the 70's, all Merc-wallahs used to think Bajaj scooters or Hero cycles were good enough for their employees / masses!!!
Cheers!

Hi Guys,
> Talking of 'Joiners' being upgraded to gun designers - here's a true story:
> My friend & his wife were left in the lurch when their cook left them suddenly,
> As they had invited a few friends for dinner the next day, they spread the word around seeking the services of a cook,
> The following morning a chap appeared - the wife asked him where have worked before & he replied in "Dasprakash' (a well reputed hotel in south),
> Impressed, he was hired and told to cook dinner for 10, with jilebis & cream for dessert.
> To their utter surprise the food was horrible & no jilebis were made,
> When asked as to why with an experience in Dasprakash, he made such a disaster of the dinner,
> The chap replied - Yes I did work in Dasprakash but "I WAS A WATCHMAN THERE"!!!!
> So much for our IOF selecting designers for making precision firearms!!!
Cheers ROTFL ROTFL ROTFL

the monkey wanted to design a walking stick for retired IOF chaps. But he drank the 'desi tharrra' and forgot to put a stick under the handle. BINGO.... you have IOF Ashani now.
