Nana Patekar now a 'Renowned Shot'
Nana Patekar now a 'Renowned Shot'
MUMBAI, Jan 29: Film star Nana Patekar was exulting for two reasons on Monday.
One, he was part of the Maharashtra team that won bronze at the National 300m Big Bore Shooting championship at Mhow near Indore last week. Two, he had earned the title of 'Renowned Shot' by finishing above half the number of participants. Nana finished 13th out of 49.
"It's a great feat as far as I am concerned," said Nana.
The 'Renowned Shot' tag means Nana can import a rifle duty free. "Let me get this new rifle, I can assure you I will shoot 590 points out of 600," said Nana with unabashed cockiness.
At Mhow, Nana shot 549/600 with a borrowed rifle - 33 points more than his last year's personal best of 516.
Teammates Sumit Gupta scored 512 and Ashok Pandit 476. Maharashtra were just two points adrift of second-placed Chattisgarh (1,539 points) who were second behind champions Services (1,729). "While services shooters have been at it for for 16 years, we had just four days of practice," Nana said.

Abhijeet,
Am I being too optimistic if I ask for an IFG team in 2008? or is this only open to states/ service etc?
'm sure we have enough talent and firepower to go for it...
Best

Team IFG at the nationals means we will have to associate with that much reviled organisation NRAI... AFAIK, only members of NRAI/ members of shooting clubs/ rifle associations affiliated to NRAI can participate... I could be wrong though - maybe members who are current with the rules/ regulations can pitch in here and correct me if I am wrong...
Cheers!

Re: Nana Patekar now a 'Renowned Shot'
Sharief,
There are two kinds of 300m matches both of which follow the 3 position shooting at 50m that is done with rimfires albeit at longer rages with centerfire rifles. DO a Google search for CISM which is the military match with a 10 rd magazine in the rifles and ISSF 300m Rife Matches for the civilian version with single shot rifles. We have the NRA High Power rifle matches at 300m in the USA which are very similar.
The guns are expensive, ammunition even more so and these days a lot of developments from benchrest are entering the sport making it much more high tech than the hammer and chisel stuff that ISSF shooters are usually accustomed to. Nana PAtekar may be a good shot but his boasts about beating the rest of the world if he gets a 300 m rifle (which one?) are silly. Methinks he should learn to keep his mouth shut and not brag too much in public. This is not a film audience after all...

Mehul, Thanks for the reply. I know about NRA High Power rifle but didn't know how the desi or ISSF version. Yes, I had looked into getting into that. But the high end custom bolt actions get really expensive really fast. Like you said, the ammo is worse, hand loads rule and those guys are worse than chemists or gold smiths, scared me out.
Nana, not knowing him at all, I'd say he's being an entertainer more than a sportsperson. I'm sure he'll learn that "Its not the arrow, its the Indian". Well, mostly anyway.

Abhijeet,
How could IFG join the NRAI? Perhaps, we could look at asking them tough questions on the spot. Or, if they decide to disallow our group, we could sue them under the Monopolies laws. I do know that the Cosmopolitan Golf Club in Chennai was forced to allow a separate Golfers Federation to use the golf course after they filed in the courts over the club;s refusal to let them. My father was the Treasurer at the main Cosmopolital Club at the time and there were dozens of meetings to try and defuse the Golfers' Federation lawsuit but in the end the laws prevailed. We do have a legal precedent to hammer the NRAI if they try to block us.
Perhaps penpusher could offer us his expert advice on the legal issues here?

Well... Mehul, these competitions are held by/ and under the supervision of the NRAI, so not sure if there could be a work around in this case...

Re: Nana Patekar now a 'Renowned Shot'
Abhijeet,
That is the precise monopoly that I am talking about legally targetting.
The Cosmopolitan Club used to conduct what was called the Hindu-Cosmopolitan Golf Championships (I think Malaysian Airlines sponsors them these days instead of The Hindu) and that was what the Tamilnadu Golfers' Federation protested. The Chennai High Court and then the Supreme Court agreed that one organisation did not have a monopoly over conducting this championship and forced some kind of deal between the two. If you need the details of the case, I could get them for you. I still am a member of the club.
If we would like to act on this, I am most willing to support the action legally as well as financially from my end.
Cheers!

We must, in a parallel fashion , get our team and shooters ready with hardware, as we try legal means.
Thats being optimistic-for when we get a TEAM IFG going.
Mehul-
Seems to make some kinda sense about MRTP act and the cosmo club precedent.
Wont know if it'll work till we try.
We'll need to raise a sub.scription towards this to cover legal advice etc??

Asif,
Happy to support whatever legal effort is decided on from my side to whatever extent I can. Just let me know and I'll do my bit.
Dev,
Way to go! I do hope that we have several participants wearing IFG T-Shirts. If we do decide on a logo then the T-shirts should be made side by side with the stickers. That would be showing the shooting community that we're serious.
Best wishes and may more medals follow us after Danish's win last month!
