penpusher, neither gun had deep pitting ( about 5 thou max ) but it is an almost inevitable result of the use of black powder - barrels have to be cleaned immediately after such use. The barrels were lapped using honing stones on a lathe.

The debate is still ongoing. Can nitro cartridges be used in damascus barrel ?

Great to see such posts by Grumpy who carries so much knowledge on these subjects. i too have a sxs box lock 12 bore 2-3/4 chamber by W.P.Jones damascus barrel shotgun. There are no Nitro proof marking on it so I am sceptical if the barrels can fire heavy cartridge like a Mirage palla slug ? The gun is aleady checked by gunsmith and barrels are in perfect condition.
