Are these South African " Boerboel " somehow related to the Rhodesian Ridgebacks?
[/quote]

From whatever little I know, The Rhodesian Ridgebacks were bred specifically to bay lions, that is to harass the lion, till such time a hunter could despatch it from as close as thirty metres. Despatching the lion from 30 metres was due to the rifles of those times, which rendered their effectiveness at close ranges.

Hence the RRs were specifically bred for this purpose. The breeds used for were Khoikoi, Greyhound, Bulldog, Pointer, Irish Terrier, Airdale Terrier, Collie, and Deerhound. Speed, intelligence , cunning, and power these were the traits kept in mind while breeding.

The Boerbulls on the other hand were bred specifically for a much larger role, to protect the entire farm ans its family, which comprised humans, and livestock. The S. African outback is quite rough and only the sturdiest animals could fulfill the aforesaid functions . Though the origins of the Boerboels is not that well documented, it has been traced to one Jan Van Riebeeck who landed in S. Africa with a pair of bullenbjiters. Thes were cross bred with Mastiffs, which were used by the DeBeer mining company as watchdogs. Later on these dogs were bred with many other breeds the long legged bulldog and other indigeous breeds in S. Africa.

In all probabilities, the RR and BB may have common ancestry.

I am not so sure if all the breeds you have mentioned were actually used for raising the Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Simply because the Ridgeback comes in only one colour with a distinct black line running along his back giving him the name.
The only difference I found between the two breeds (RR and BB) was that the muzzle of the Boerboels is more like a mastiffs when compared with that of a Ridgeback.
Since South Africa is geographically not very far from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) , {as you have mentioned} , there could be some common genes amongst the two breeds.

Hi Prashant,
The breeds mentioned are documented by experts breeding the RR.The distinctive, ridge, is actually, and quite interestingly, 'whorls' of hair which grow against the direction of the normal coat. The RR is actually a fantastic dog, because it has immense courage, cunning, intelligence and affectionate towards the family. However, they are more 'pack' dogs , though integrating with its human family is not a problem, provided the owner is dog savy, say somebody like Yaj.
I recently saw a few adds on the internet displaying sale of RR puppies in Mumbai. I am sure it is some puppy broker, because if you see the picture of the pup, you can make out that he has unfortunately had a very indifferent upbringing thus far.

IIRC one member of IFG got ridgeback or was thinking of importing some.

From all I read, both are two different breeds though there might be some lines common to both.

The Boerboel is a mastiff whereas the Ridgeback is not.

Any dog of that size and strength requires experience, patience and a lot of socialisation and training to avoid tragedies of any sort.My only concern with larger breeds is that their life span tends to be short. Can be very painful.

Once again HVJ, those dogs look great.

Best-
Vikram

This is a AKC recognized breed and mixed between common English mastiff and Anatolian Mastiff and check them out in WIKIPEDIA...if u have any news on the breeds in INdia (any IFGian) kindly let me know....

Hello Vikram,
Thanks buddy, you hit on a sore spot, the average life span is 10 years, give or take a couple. I've mulled on that and come to the conclusion, that each moment spent with my friends is a moment blessed by God. Hence I cherish each moment, the funny side, the playful, the aggressive, each moment strung like a pearl on a necklace spanning these wonderful times.
Regards

Vassili,
Sorry mate, have no info on them.
