Hunting foxes is legal?
Dear Friends,
We have fish ponds (2 to 5 achres each), The main problem there is Foxes and forest pigs,
Foxes enter into ponds and eat fishes, and Pigs run on the banks of the ponds and spoil the nets which we keep to prevent birds.
In these two ways the production is reducing to 30 to 40% of real yield. To prevent this problem we usually ues some Divali crackers (becoming very expensive) to make them afraid but now a days this technique is also becoming useless caz those animals became habited with those sounds and not caring it.
Can some one give me some better Idea with which type of weapon is useful to make them wound and not to come back?

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Hunting foxes is illegal. If wild pigs are causing problem, pest control permits are issued in some places. You are better off talking to the local Forest Department.
Wounding animals is not humane and it's unethical. Also, that itself is a crime.
May be there are other posters who can come up with practical and legal solutions.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Hunting foxes is not legal anywhere in INDIA and about pigs you need to ask concerned authorities. Some states are giving crop protection permit for them. I am not too sure whether fish farming comes under that or not.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Thanks Vikram,
Yes, the forest deportment ppl saying that it killing or wounding is illegal, So that only I my self reported this port to admin, whether i can keep or delete here,
May be you know Indian actual village conditions, forest ppl dont come and even we complied many times about this problem.
Mainly foxes are creating big damage by killing and eating fishes, wild pigs are only spoiling the nets.
My question is which weapon gives big sound at lower cost(weapon and its ammo too)
Some of a arm dealer told me that with a PCP a fox will dye from 30 miters, let me know is he correct? This also I am asking for the power of PCP not use it on pests.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
Don,
Understand and appreciate your dilemma. Killing and wounding wild animals is illegal and you want to protect your property.
Whatever could be the ground realities, not breaking the law is of at most importance if one wishes to avoid costly problems.
How about keeping a couple of guard dogs around the place? They will take care of both foxes, pigs and also unwanted human intrusions.
PCPs are not going to be cheap is what I feel.Killing any animal with an air rifle is not easy unless one knows what one is doing. They come in all kind of power ranges.

I understand your agony. The easy way to control this problem is like Vikram said - keep a dog.
My farm is located in an area where leopards are a frequent visitor.I started keeping Rampur Hounds.Have'nt had any problems with leopards since then.
A more scientific but expensive way would be to erect a power fence around your farm.
Any form of hunting is banned in India.Foxes and Wild Pigs are protected Schedule Animals under the Indian Wildlife Act.
But if the Wildlife Warden of state has reasons to believe that an animal has become dangerous to human
life or to property (including standing crops on any land, he may declare it to be a vermin and allow it to be destroyed.
I am pasting relevant sections of the Wildlife Act in this regard.
CHAPTER III
Hunting of Wild Animals
[(9 Prohibition of Hunting. – No person shall hunt any wild animal specified in Schedule,
I, II, III and IV except as provided under section 11 and section 12. 1]
10. [2 (Omitted 199)
11. Hunting of Wild animals to be permitted in certain cases.– (1) Notwithstanding
anything contained in any other law for the time being in force and subject to the provisions of
Chapter IV –
(a) the Chief Wildlife Warden may, if he is satisfied that any wild animal specified in
Sch. 1 has become dangerous to human life or is so disabled or diseased as to be
beyond recovery, by order in writing and stating the reasons therefor, permit any
person to hunt such animal or cause animal to be hunted;
(b) the Chief Wildlife Warden or the authorised officer may, if he is satisfied that any
wild animal specified in Sch. II Sch, III or Sch. IV has become dangerous to human
life or to property (including standing crops on any land) or is so disabled or diseased
as to be beyond recovery, by order in writing and stating the reasons therefor, permit
any person to hunt such animal or cause such animal to be hunted.
(2) The killing or wounding in good faith of any wild animal in defence of oneself or of any
other person shall not be an offence;
Provided that nothing in this sub-section shall exonerate any person who, when such
defence becomes necessary, was committing any act in contravention of any provision of this Act
or any rule or order made thereunder.
(3) Any wild animal killed or wounded in defence of any person shall be Government
property.
CHAPTER VII
Miscellaneous
62. Declaration of certain wild animal to be vermin. - [8The Central Government] may
by notification, declare any wild animal other than those specified in Sch. I and part 11 of Sch H
to be vermin for any area and for such period as may be specified therein and so long as such
notification is in force, such wild animal shall be deemed to have been included in Sch.V.

Nitro Express,
Arranging electrical mesh is not correct caz Cows and buffaloes will come for grass and even ppl walk around in day times to go to other ponds through,
Vikram,
Dogs is some currect idea but need to chk the possibilities caz the ponds are located 15Kms from our village, one person works for carrying food and others to the ponds for other workers. Totally we have 40 acres.
I didn't know much abt dogs and i afraid dogs (one dog bite me while I was 7 years),
I heard that good hunting dogs (dabarman) need meat daily (right)? In our village the pork or beef ( writing this for cheap food for those) is not available, and i heard that dogs are very costly affair in terms of food vaccination etc,

I would heed to advise above unless proper authorities issue the permit dont hunt them - understand Foxes there arent many left. As Vikram recommended get some dogs dont need expensive dobermanns etc they have lot of overhead - just pick up village mongrels feed them and they are tough and smart dogs will create enough ruckus to scare the foxes - more the better. Dogs mark their territory with urine and thats a challenge enough to scare Foxes away and so will humans for that matter. Another time tested method and even used by CIA and KGB was using Tabasco sauce for drops - no animal or bird would scavenge it - try mixing vinegar and chillies for your own brew or Rople as listed below. Motion detector light per article also does the trick.

Pigs are different matter altogether but dogs and light should scare them.
Also but a pressure horn one that makes hell of a noise.
Good luck

Dogs can bite an intruder -- good sign beware of dogs - get them vaccinated for rabies and others vaccines would make them safer. Now if they bite some one - well that can be managed via some training - every one will give a mile to your place..choice is yours. But having seen my relatives farm is such places it was combination of loud noise and pair of dogs that kept critters of two legs, four legs and slithering ones away.

Don,
Any of the above mentioned alternatives is more efficient and cost effective than the ones you have been contemplating. With your plans, you will be breaking law and quite possibly end up in prison. You do the math.JMHO.

Re: Hunting foxes is legal?
dogs are very nice idea, and you want a cost effective option?? go for the mongrels. the dogs that you see around in your place, pick them up young. may be half a dozen, invest 2 months training them in the farm... invest=effort and time..
they are aggrssive, show pack behaviour and can ward of foxes. i hope you mean the real fox because in general we call all these guys fox, but there are wild dogs, red tailed dogs, fox and wolf that are common in our forest. Domestic dogs (a pack of them) are good against fox and red tailed dogs.
and for food and vaccination, meat is not a daily requirement, when young feed them bones, i am sure beef and pork bones will find its way to you for almost no price from butchers. vaccination for rabies will hold good for an year, and the local veterinary doctor (Govt) can administer them at low cost.
and one more thing, you dont want dogs to be the next issue, so neuter /spay them once they are 4 -5 months..
