Probably your administration there will decide on that.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

Hello NagaRifle & m24

It is not that easy to proclaim elephants now a days.Only when the Chief Wildlife Warden of the State is convinced that the elephant in question is a habitual killer only then shall he make use of the power vested upon him by the Wild Life Act and pass an order for destroying the Rouge.

In cases of crop damage by wild elephants, the Forest Department along with the District Administration will evaluate the loss and compensate the land owner as per provision of Project Elephant. All Elephant Range States in India get a huge amount of funds from Project Elephant for such situations.

** Elephants have used the banks of the Doyang River as a corridor for ages. The route is part of the original trans state elephant corridor.

Read P.D Stracey's '"Elephant Gold" and you shall get an idea of the dynamics of Elephant Shikar.

Now a days if at all there is a need to catch an elephant, it done using a dart gun.It is a more humane method.

I live with six elephants.Over the years I have realised that we were wrong capturing them as an Anti Depredation Measure.Habitual crop raiders are around 7 feet tall.Whereas the ones we caught averaged around 6 feet.

Here's our very own "Elephant Man" ......Nitro Express.
Mela Shikar has always fascinated me.
Another good read is a book on big game hunting called the "Brown Hunter" by Mr S.A.H.A.A. Imam. He has a chapter dedicated to Mela Shikar and Garh Shikar in the book. With a ban on Shikar the book went out of publication some decades ago. I am fortunate enough to own a copy , autographed by the author.
Hello Prashant!

Tutu Imam was well known to my father. He too possessed an Elephant Control Licence. He along with his wife had shot many elephants in Assam.Use to always drive a Land Rover Series 1. Was mainly a Shikar Outfitter for Rowland Ward who specialised in tiger hunts.Always used a Westley Richards 470.Went out of business around 1983.

Wrote to almost everybody in the Parliament to revoke the ban on hunting.Indira Gandhi had just passed the bill banning hunting then.

Thanks Naga & Nitro for the info on kazerunga park. Not a bad idea from Drifter, since an IFGian has a resort there, what better place to have an IFG get together in November at Kazerunga?
What say chaps?

Shall extend all help to make the event a success.

In his late 80s now. He has the same passion for horses and still rides them.
His son Bullu is also an active and keen wildlifer. Have read his articles in wildlife magazines.

NitroExpress,

Thank you for sharing some very interesting experiences with us. I agree with you about adopting more humane methods in training/taming of these animals. I do not believe in shooting one unless it is absolutely unavoidable in the present scenario.

I would dearly like to read more of your experiences and thoughts on wildlife conservation etc.

Best-
Vikram

Hi Kaushik,

Is Mela Shikar harsh?

The early training of elephants in Assam is traditionally based on breaking its spirit by beating it and making it submissive. Is this statement true?

Assamese way of training elephant involves much pain and suffering which is inflicted until there is no resistance or reaction, over a period of many days.

Is this true please elaborate. Thanks

Obuwana
