Re: Apply for your elephant hunting licence in Assam
Hello Nitro Express,
Been silently reading the highly interesting exchanges between you and naga, thanks for all the information, like you, I too have given up hunting, though my hunting was confined to small and medium sized game. Just wondering, if it is possible to do a short photo safari. Also how far is Kazerunga Rhino Sanctuary from Guwahti?
Keep the good work with the elephants and particularly impressed by your efforts to implement humane methods for handling the elephants in Assam.
Best Regards

For now this thread may be fit for this section but I am sure soon its going to be a reality and I think first area with be Bannergatta national park near Bangalore. Elephants have killed 10 people since this march.

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

this is reported in my local rag, in Nagaland: does it mean we can shoot em
Dimapur, July 22 (MExN): A herd of wild elephants is wrecking havoc in VK area under Zunheboto district, damaging a number of paddy fields over the last few days. Villagers in Litami (old) village reported that wild elephants have completely destroyed six paddy fields belonging to the villagers. This year’s monsoon has been favourable for paddy cultivation but their efforts have gone waste, the villagers said.
The villagers claimed that about 20 to 30 wild elephants have entered their territory from neighbouring Wokha district. They said that some of the elephants are in their gestation period and could increase in number in the coming days. The elephants are said to be roaming around and villagers are now scared to go to visit their fields.
The wild elephant menace is not new to this area. Villages in Wokha district, adjoining the Doyang River, and neighbouring villages in VK area have been facing the problem for many years. Last year too, several fields were destroyed by elephants in villages of both districts. The villagers fear that the elephants may soon become a threat to people’s lives as well. The villagers have appealed to the department of Forest and Wildlife to take measures to stop the elephant menace permanently.

Here's our very own "Elephant Man" ......Nitro Express.Nitro Express wrote:
Read P.D Stracey's '"Elephant Gold" and you shall get an idea of the dynamics of Elephant Shikar.
Now a days if at all there is a need to catch an elephant, it done using a dart gun.It is a more humane method.
I live with six elephants.Over the years I have realised that we were wrong capturing them as an Anti Depredation Measure.Habitual crop raiders are around 7 feet tall.Whereas the ones we caught averaged around 6 feet.

Mela Shikar has always fascinated me.
Another good read is a book on big game hunting called the "Brown Hunter" by Mr S.A.H.A.A. Imam. He has a chapter dedicated to Mela Shikar and Garh Shikar in the book. With a ban on Shikar the book went out of publication some decades ago. I am fortunate enough to own a copy , autographed by the author.
