Safety Lesson

Post by shooter » Sun Jul 18, 2010 5:12 pm

M*** was....... no is an experienced, and more importantly a safe shot.

The other day he had gone shooting and a bit of mud got into his barrel. Or maybe it was from the trip before, we shall never know.

However, hedidn't check if his barrels were clear before loading the ammo in the chambers. There comes a woodie, he thought, swung the gun, eyes on the target, barrels ahed of the target, swinging smoothly, and Bang.....

See what happened:

Thankfully M wasn't hurt, just badly shaken.

Looking at his gun, I thanked God for the time when as a newbie waiting for ducks in knee deep mud, some mud went into my barrel and having deliberated about firing at the incoming flock of teal (thats shikar for you; what timing), decided against it.

Fellow members please be aware of the danger of firing a barrel blocked with mud or even snow. Donot think, it is still soft, not hardened. It is still as dangerous.

You want more gun control? Use both hands!

Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.
