Is it legal to EDC a knife in India?

Post by Devrishi » Fri Jul 16, 2010 12:22 pm

Hi,

I want to know if it is legal/okay to carry a knife (below 9 inch length &/or 2 inch in width) in India??

I mean imagine a situation where in you are carrying a knife and something happens and a bad guy is trying to hurt you & you genuinely draw/flick open your 6 inch blade length knife - a scene is created and somehow police comes in. What explaination are we going to give to police??? that I am a good guy with a knife  for self protection!!!

May be I am charged with an offence and /or motive of carrying a knife!!!

On the other hand, in the same situation, if I have a licenced handgun - i don't see any problem - i can show my licence to cops - things are much easy and under control.

I am sorry i do not understand with clarity.... Please explain!!!

Regards

Devrishi

Besides the stipulations of the Arms Act, the local city/ district/ state authorities can issue local/ district wide/ state wide restrictions on carrying of knives which may actually cover shorter length blades as well. So you first need to figure out what restrictions (if any) apply to your particular area of residence.

Secondly, one must also keep in mind the fact that even though the size of blade you are carrying on your person may be within the prescribed limits - you can still be detained by the cops for overnight questioning, on mere suspicion!

Thirdly, some offices/ businesses/ institutions etc., may place additional restrictions on carrying on blades within their premises. In my experience very few of them actually have any locker facilities for you to safely deposit your blade for the period of your visit, which can often mean a trek back to your car where you then pop it in the glove compartment.

I'm carrying different knives for many years, never been an issue with police, security guards dont like fixed blades, stopped my wife recently while entering Autoshow. I carry 5.11 tactical karambit it looks a bit like bottle opener, blade is short so not a triggering and reaction from anyone. Most police may be quite ignorant regarding the rules, best thing to prepare knife certificate and get it signed by local police commissioner. When you buy knife in Russia for example it already sold with such certificate. Then carry certificate with you always.

IMO if you carry folder with short blade that never will be an issue. for knife to be an effective weapon for selfdefence, large blade is not required, what is important is how fast you can deploy it, and how good you trained to use it. if you want large blade to carry with you with idea to scare attackers away, that is very bad idea. You draw out a knife and he will shoot you with a gun.

I think many people carry knives to gain some self confidence, sure it serve the purpose, but from technical point of view it is wrong. knife itself is just a tool, without proper training, chances that you will be killed with your own knife are quite high.

in Silat for example, you have to complete 4 years training in basics, before you will be allowed to learn knife.

Thanks

that is not a "permission", but certificate, which certify that this particular knife (which you are carrying) is OK to carry according to Indian laws. I do not have idea if such certificate is possible to obtain at all. just the way to go, to protect yourself from free style interpretations by police. Once I been told by security guard, that you cant go into the mall with knife which has blade longer then 15 cm, but my knife blade was 13 cm. If I have certificate which indicate how long blade of this knife issue can be closed.

Thank You, don't know if this is valid in Mumbai.

The blades that come with Victrinox Multitools & Swiss Army Knives are excellent for EDC carry, the Soldatenmesser, the Victrinox Soldiers Knife etc.

yes knives scary, some guy told that me that in US more people killed by knives then by guns every year.

I did not teach Silat, just learning. I studied Dhukti negara, then Mubai silat for karambit, now interested in Mande Mude - Sebatan, because all the same moves apply for knives.
But I know one russian guy he teaches silat knives and conducting seminars like 30-45 days he is available if booked in advance.

Silat is most amazing martial arts. For example in most other martial arts they teach about different distances, in Silat only one distance CLOSE - deceive, get close, and dominate.

here is nice writings about Silat, all those articles before were on Stiven Plinck web site, but now, web site is no more, so all moved into this blog.

sure would be great to meet, I'm traveling via Delhi 4-5 times per year, but never stay for long, especially with all those diggings going on everywhere.

I regularly carry a Benchmade 551H2O these days with a 3.5" blade length - mainly as a engineering tool to do jobs like fruit cutting, box opening, etc. It is also advisable to refer to the knife as a "cutting tool" in case you are questioned. A discrete carry is the best option, rather than a showoff - this way you will never land into trouble until the knife is required in public. Smaller knives are best options, like a necker, or a 2 or 2.5" Spyderco knife (cricket), or best of all the SAK.

I pass unhindered at almost all malls, as the knife goes in the same pocket as the keys, and every guard gropes the keys, and lets me pass.

And yes, no matter what the law says, if they want to get you, they will. Laws simply do not exist at that time.

Forget about the knives & blades, I could not enter a cineama theater because I was carrying a laptop.
While on a business tour to Dehli, because of Flight delay, went to a Cinema Theater in a Shopping Mall to pass the extra time, but stopped by security as I was carrying a Laptop, and as the Mall did not had the locker facility, spent the time in a book shop & a coffee shop.
