Southern Naval Command Chief Rear Admiral S S Jamwal was killed at a firing range incident at INS Dronacharya in Kochi, Naval sources said on Tuesday.
The 51-year-old officer was killed when he was accidentally hit by a bullet in the head while a training session was underway at the firing range, Navy sources said, adding that a probe has been initiated into the incident.
INS Dronacharya, a gunnery school, is located about 10 km from INS Venduruthy, which is the main Naval Base in Kochi.
Rear Admiral Jamwal entered the Navy on July 1, 1980. He is survived by his wife Geeta and two children.
shocking to say the least. Second incident of
accidental shooting recently.

Naval command Chief shot in the head.....at a firing range.....fishy! The Guy is not any jawan or any small officer, he is the chief. Armed forces follow a lot of precautions when people of such ranks are on the field.
My heart goes out for his family during this difficult time.

condolence to the family, but its hard to digest.
Sr officers of his rank, even when present on the range, stand behind the line of firing and that too way behind. Bullets are fired in opposite direction, So
, but we never know, bullets do stray out.

This is a sad and unfortunate accident may he RIP. What a sad loss to the command/nation and condolences to the family. Again stresses the need to adhere to safety and range rules. Even Gen David Howell Petraeus US army survived a similar shooting accident shot in the chest when M 16 was discharged accidentally by a Soldier who tripped.
Then there was news yesterday Delhi Police armor who got shot in the head and died when his trainee was cleaning a pistol with a round in the chamber.

One news report said he was checking as to why the weapon was not firing and it went off accidentally. Very unfortunate incident. Condolences to his family.

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

Wonder what really happened, whether it was accidental or made to look that way. Weapons have to be given due respect.
