Cop cleaning gun shoots colleague
A sheer case of negligence: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/City ... 122005.cms
A 49-year-old head constable died inside Connaught Place police station when another policeman's service pistol, which he was cleaning, went off accidentally. The incident took place around 11:15am. The victim has been identified as T P Illyas, of Kerala, who had been living with his family in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar.
He was posted with the New Delhi district armoury team and was responsible for the training of new recruits posted at police stations and the maintenance of arms, said a senior police officer. "There was a training session for five-six policemen at the Connaught Place police station. Illyas and the other personnel were in the courtyard near the police station's `maalkhana' (storeroom)," the officer added. A new recruit, Constable Mohit, who was part of Illyas's team, was standing with him.
Another constable passing by was stopped by Illyas after he noticed rusting on his 9MM pistol. He asked the constable to hand over his pistol. The constable handed over the pistol to Illyas without taking out the magazine. Illyas then gave Mohit the pistol to clean. Mohit also did not remove the magazine while cleaning the pistol at this time Illyas and Mohit were sitting in the basement and accidentally pulled the trigger," said a senior police officer.
The bullet passed through the right side of Illyas's chest. His heart and liver were damaged by the bullet," the officer added. Illyas was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A constable who had been standing near Illyas also suffered minor injuries.
Police said they have registered a case of death due to negligence and that the constable who accidentally pulled the trigger will be suspended and later arrested. The body has been sent to hospital for a postmortem. Illyas had been in the armoury team for the past 14 years and was living alone with his wife and two daughters in Delhi for the past 29 years, said police.

Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

Should serve as an eye opener for the Police. Basics to be taught for all those who even touch the gun. unfortunate part is, incidents of Police misfiring pistols have been heard in the last one year in multiple states , but no learnings for the rest.. May the poor soul rest in peace..

This is one of few incident which highlight the whole concept of gun safety.
Some members here, whom were having tough time understanding the concept of gun safety should read this and then go back to the basics of the gun safety.

But my sympathies are for the unfortunate family, what a terrible price to pay. What surprises me, is that the cop who died was 14 years in service, that too armoury.sa_ali wrote:This is one of few incident which highlight the whole concept of gun safety.

To cite one such instance, when the 25 m range at Baliwadi was completed, I was tasked to supervise the firing of the Commonwealth Youth Games team. Now the team comprised of shooters from all over Maharashtra. Some students were firing, these kids were below 18 years of age. None of their coaches were present. The kids after firing would hold the pistol it at an awkward angle and stare through the scope, some swung their weapons casually around, the muzzle tracing an arc, bisecting most of the shooters standing on the side. I watched 3-4 shooters firing, for 10 minutes. I yelled out CEASE FIRE and PACK UP. The students were shocked , some annoyed. Once the weapons were in safe custody, I walked up to administrator and point blank told him, that I will NOT supervise the 25 m range, until unless all the coaches were present. Then I chewed the asses of all of the coaches first for not being present, and secondly for not imbibing correct safety procedures. One of the kids was selected for an international, and not surprisingly she was suspended by the international range officer. The coach of this particular student, was formerly a football player, he has never taken part in any firearm or air pistol competition, is a COACH for the Govt. of Mah. The officers, like him off course because he is a pure haan ji , haan ji type, does all sorts of menial tasks alloted to him.

Now that, truly, will happen only in this country.

Me too,
I was coaching the Army team, at that point of time, we were firing the IOF 9mm. All safety precautions were followed, weapons were down, magazine empty and OUT, slide jacked back. all pistols pointing down range. This was during a break in the firing, an opportunity where the coach goes blah, blah blah, in the meantime, the 'repair party' is out in front plugging holes in the paper targets with 'atta' and pieces of paper.
So yours truly, blathering away, saunters up to one of the pistols, tells the chaps/new recruits. 'This is what you shouldnt be doing" lifted the pistol, for some reason the slide was not jacked back. Never mind 'Hot Shot Coach' is busy blathering away, slams the empty mag into the pistol, did not notice the hammer was cocked and pulled the friggin tigger, luckily pointing down range. KAABAM, went the pistol, I pissed and crapped in my pants. I looked down range . THANKFULLY no repair party! Even now when I recall that incident I get the chills man. There was a round in the bloody chamber, I should have jacked back the slide THEN slammed in the mag. I thank the Lord Almighty for His tender Mercies.
This incident put such a fear of God, within me, to the extent that I look upon all weapons, as if they are bloody cobras. Make damn sure that its alright to handle as well as to shoot.

Actually the pistol did NOT go off accidentally. The trigger was pulled.A 49-year-old head constable died inside Connaught Place police station when another policeman's service pistol, which he was cleaning, went off accidentally.
Looks like he violated all four rules here
The four rules MUST be adhered to at all times.
You cannot repeat them to yourself often enough.

Re: Cop cleaning gun shoots colleague
Similar incident happened in Mumbai Arms Branch where the Sr.. Inspector trying to show off his knowledge of fire arms, or lack of it, by catapulting the pistol of a stupid gun owner who had come for the renewal with a loaded pistol. Almost shot his family jewels off in the act. Luckily his life was saved by the able team of doctors at St. George's Hospital. A prospective client from UP accompanied by an armed friend entered India Arms at Abdul Rehman street, Mumbai some years ago. The friend was trying to explain that he was seeking a revolver with a safety catch for his friend, similar to the one he possessed. He managed to shoot the owner through the heart while demonstrating.
