Quite a few old-timers here actually. :D

Can't place Appu aur Pappu, but when you say a pet hospital show with Deena Pathak in it, that seems to ring a bell somewhere.

Miss all those old classics. If I start naming them, I'll go major OT. :)

Timmy

Thats a great tale...I need to confess I am guilty of doing the exact opposite. Eons ago in my village a small farmer offered a prize to get rid of some baaz ( Kite or a Hawk) which was devouring his chickens and occasionally harassing his folks and wasnt afraid of dogs either considered them fair game. Naive and stupid as we were my cousin and I agreed to check out the barn/old building where this bird was. I with a .22 rifle walked into the dark hall following my cousin with his crossman airgun. Next all I remember is a some one yelling and then seeing a big bird diving straight for me in the door - exit which I was blocking..too stunned to duck just took a dangerous shot and fatally injured it. It was a decent sized owl but we did everything wrong - was later royally chewed out by my grandfather when he found out about the incident( left out the part that my cousin was in the hall too because we were all trained about gun safety dos and donts). My grandfather explained the eco balance these great birds maintained but it was end of shooting for us that summer . Again I did everything wrong should have never taken the challenge/taunts or fallen for Rs 5 and could have injured some one with the crazy shot even though but it was my reflex action trying to save my hide. Not something I am proud off felt bad afterward s and it does have great talons nearly sheared off the dogs tail when he tried to grab it .
Understand its illegal to shoot such birds which along with Hawks/Vultures are facing extinction this is an incident from my childhood..and we did everything wrong and consider one of the few incidents where I put every one around me at risk with that shot from the hip.
Another thing in India the phrase owl or Oloo is a taken as negatively something as dumb as an oloo or owl contrary to US where 'its wise Owl'..

Interesting story ngrewal.
According to Hindu mythology Owls are the "waahan" of Laxmi (the goddess of wealth).
Most farmers do not kill Owls. These birds are natures way of controlling the mice and rat population (on the farms) which would otherwise damage the stored food grains.

Lakshmiji wahan: true.

but so is a rat a wahan of Ganeshji.

But both are derogetory.

Chooha (coward) west: rat= a tattler
similarly mole= an informer but 'chhunchhundar'= worthless or not deserving
Ulloo(stupid)
Ulloo ka pattha (same unless you are Barbara Mori in Kites ; then it means I love you)

In the west: wise owl.

I forget there ia a publishing house which has the owl as its symbol.

again wit the advent of British and western edication, people again mix up whether it is wise of stupid.

East: fat=bhains (buffalo); west fat= cow; east gai (cow)= simple

Sanskrit: walk like an elephant is the epitome of a sexy walk; west: try telling your wife/partner she walks like one. But in the west: catwalk. hindi = billi ki chaal

i would like to invite fellow ifgians to add to the list.

Ha Ha Ha . Good one Shooters.
We have an old dead tree at the farm which is home to many Ullu's and their "patthas".
There is an interesting story about the Ullu being the wahan of laxmi mata.
Now laxmi mata is the goddess of wealth , and ullu being her waahan.......It is also said that those in pursuit of immense wealth become an Ullu (working hard /staying up all night etc etc.) in the bargain.

Its sad that scavengers and birds of prey are facing extinction.

As a kid i remember seeing vultures was like spotting crows. Even incities. Countryside was teeming with them.

I never thought they could now be threatened. Its a pity they arent 'cute' enough to be loved by the so called conservationist despite their crucial role in the food web and carrion disposal.

Regarding an owl's silent flight, I had often read of how their wing flight feathers have a design which, when they are in certain modes of flight, disturbs the air very little. This results in their nearly silent flight when they are diving on their prey. It was one thing to read of it, but when Gail told me of that big bird's silent flight right over the top of her head, I became a believer!

I think that the Western idea of owls has to do with the bird's association with Athena, who, in Ancient Greece, was the goddess of wisdom.

Many of the hawks and eagles were affected strongly by the widespread use of DDT as an insecticide here in the USA. This chemical would cause the eggshells of these birds to be very soft and weak, causing high mortality in their young. Some species nearly became extinct.

Out West in pastures, people would leave up telephone poles even after the lines were abandoned, because the hawks and eagles will use them as perches from which to surveil fields. The big birds of prey have been enjoying a comeback over here.

I agree with the idea that our notions of wild animal management (especially that of "kill all predators") has been very foolish and short-sighted. Hopefully it is not too late to act in their favor.
...unless you are Barbara Mori in Kites...
Barbara Mori is someone I was familiar with long before her affair with Hritik Roshan. She was a noted actress in Spanish language telenovelas, which I enjoy watching very much when I have the time. If I recall correctly, she is from Uruguay and part Japanese. Her big telenovela was Rubi, but I did not watch that one. I don't think it was too long after that, that she took up with Hritik. My guru in Bollywood movies had a friend who saw Mori and Hritik "going to town" publicly in a Las Vegas casino not so long after the show. Anyway, because of this, in my circles, Hritik is not well looked upon, and the last movie of his I've seen was Jodhaa-Akbar. (And even for that, I got the "evil eye"!)

The Bald Eagle in the U.S. almost went extinct because of DDT. There was this interesting story I had read which mentioned how the insecticide entered these beautiful birds. From the insects which it acted upon , to the fish which consumed these insects and finally the eagles which ate this fish.
In India the large scale death of Vultures is attributed to Diclofenac Sodium , a drug used extensively by Vets to treat colic in domesticated animals. This drug stays in the system long after the animal has died and subsequently proves lethal in vultures which consume the carcass. It is said that we have lost more than 90% of our vultures. The Govt. has put a ban on sale of Diclofenac (Vet.) but I am not so sure how effetive the Ban really is.
