Hello Community!

Post by ckkalyan » Sun May 30, 2010 12:05 am

Hi fellow gun lovers,

Greetings from the hot, hot United Arab Emirates!

I am Kalyan - I was absolutely delighted to discover this forum as I have been fascinated by firearms since childhood. My compliments Abhijeet - Kudos!

A little about me: I was an army brat and enjoyed using my dad's firearms at every chance under supervision, mainly a S&W .32 Revolver, a single barrel shotgun, Winchester M1 .30 Carbine a .22 Rifle and of course the venerable Le Enfield .303 Rifle. I had more opportunity to indulge while in the NCC and at Military School Bangalore.

Having never had the chance to own a proper air rifle in India when I was a kid (my dreams were Diana and Daisy from the comic books) I was overjoyed to be able to buy replica Co2 weapons by UMAREX and few other spring piston air guns in the UAE. At present my brother and I own a collection of Co2 pistols and rifles, which we practice with at home. Being a die hard of western novels and movies, I simply had to get myself a replica Winchester Lever Action (by Walther). We have set up improvised indoor ranges, with magnetic pellet traps and other interesting targets. We also love to plink at and decimate, empty pellet tins (very satisfying sound). We have since then experimented with accessories such as scopes and laser sights. Great fun!

We also go out occasionally to gun clubs and splurge on the real things, trying out various famous hand guns.

Once again I am very pleased to be a part of this forum.

Welcome to IFG, Kalyan.

Regards
Jeff Cooper advocated four basic rules of gun safety:
1) All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
2) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3) Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target.
4) Identify your target, and what is behind it.

Welcome aboard Kalyan, good to have you here :) Those are some nice guns to have grown up with and I hope you & your brother make all efforts to keep your Dad's old shooters in the family (even though the Govt. keeps on making it harder to do so  )!

Cheers!

Thank you nagarifle, Prabhat, Abhijeet.

@Abhijeet - Sadly the only shooter remaining is the M1 Carbine, which has been sitting in a private armory for the past 28 years or so. You are absolutely right about the Govt. - quite an uphill task. Haven't found a way to get it out and back into the family's possession. :(

Hi GR,

Thank you for your warm welcome.

I was referring to the gun clubs in the UAE; haven't had an opportunity to try the real things in BKK. :D

Kalyan,

Welcome to IFG. Why travel to BKK, just visit the shooting club at SHJ, it is on the emirates road next to SHJ Tasjeel. You can shoot real guns there.

Hi Reynold, thanks! I have been to the SHJ club a couple of times :)

Hi GR, you do not need to be a member to use the shooting range facility; the charges will be slightly higher for a non-member. I shall post all details of the shooting club in a new topic. By the way, a correction, I did try out the facility at Phuket BKK on one occasion, just a quick round with a .22 Rifle, as time was limited. My memory must be failing me :( I had forgotten all about it when I posted earlier.
