Skid shooter is not the only one of his kind. A host of ignorant masses who have never had the chance to witness any kind of field sports and hunting to them is the scene of the old Solar topi and that sambhar horn in the old house where a towel is now hung on the antler.

A whole breed of people hold these wrong views about hunting, conservation and extinction as a whole. I hope we are able to project our own viewpoints and give out knowledge to this set through this forum.

As for the skid shooter and his tribe I'll always have a .577 REWA with both barrels loaded with silvertips at the very least, to give him up full.

Imagine hitting a skid clay with a .303 Lee Enfield. Chances would be 1 hit in 10 million maybe.

But just to make all of you feel better on this SKID shooting episode, I know of a chance shot when a shooter managed to down a Green Pigeon in full flight with a .22 LR. Pure chance but it happened.

I have tried my hand at hitting a tossed coke can in the air with a .22 LR but the results so far is 100 % failure.

Shahid,

Shooting flying objects with a rifle isn't a safe practice unless you are very sure that the bullet is going to land somewhere safe. Perhaps that was so in your case but I don't want newcomers to the sport trying such things.

Shahid,

This is a little OT, but I haven't seen a Green Pigeon (Harial) in ages! Do you still see many of these in your area?

Cheers!

Safety first. Always. We did it in the desert with a guy perched on the roof of a Landcruiser tossing up the cans from behind. It was only sand dunes for the next 50 Km from 200 yards onwards dead ahed. And we were careful never to bring the muzzle angle lower than 45 degrees.

Green Pigeon.

Heartening to know they are on the increase since 1999 onwards in Bihar plains.

It is common to see flights of 30 to 70 birds every morning, about 5 to 6 flights are observed on a morning drive.

The biggest flight, from a single tree I saw was in 2004, when a flight of over 350 birds rose into the skies from a single tree.

2 species here, one Plains variet that abounds the indo gangetic plains, the other a bit smaller in size and darker in plumage abounds the deeper tree forest of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Shahid Bhai

I remember that day when we went early morning and we found those birds on tree. I think we were there for more than three hours watching a single tree. That was a great fun. And while returning we also had some maner ka laddoo. I'll never forget that trip.

Well yes, that was in December 2004. what a lovely morning it was. I also remember the solitory partridge we came across in the wheat field while on our way back. The entire area is so rich and beautiful.

And yes, the Maner Laddus from Maner sweet shops and the true highway style Kachari, purees and jalebis with potato curry, followed by a tea and paan at that Dhaba makes the trip complete. It is all this fun that we love going on outdoor trips.

Besides the drive and the fun there is always this chance to come close to nature and observe many varities of flora and fauna in their natural habitat. Really look forward to these field exploration trips again with you when I come to India this March.
