If it's going to be a 1911, then consider ordering one from one of the custom pistolsmiths, check out the 1911 forum for recommendations. You will pay more, but will end up with a truly "special" pistol built to your taste!

I would suggest you go in for the smaller 1911 models.Preferably by Kimber.Have a look at the eclipse pro II or the Custom pro raptor II.Have a look and let us know what you have decided.

Also Parag, have you considered getting a revolver?A smith and wesson 327 performance center?

If you are only interested in the 1911, you might also consider the S&W 1911s.Something in their performance center models.

The 38 Super cannot be fired from the 357 Mag.You can fire the 38 special.I think you have them mixed up.There is no possibility of firing a 380 ACP or a 38 ACP.

James, you are not the only one to be confused by calibre nomenclatures... often there is little logic to the designations and many similar sounding calibres which are very different beasts in reality! So PLEASE DO NOT try to interchange calibres as that is a sure shot recipe for disaster!

For example take the above case - the .38 ACP and .380 ACP are two very different cartridges even though they sound so very similar.

When in doubt NEVER substitute one cartridge for some other simply because it sounds similar or even if it "fits"... do your research else you will ruin a gun and maybe an eye (or two) or even worse! Shoot safe.

Mundaire:
.380 ACP/9 mm Short. Case diame.374, case length .68, rimless case. Bullet diameter .356".
.38 Colt Automatic & Super: Case diameter .383, rim diameter .405, case length 1.28. Semi-rimless case. Bullet diamter .358".
The two latter cases only differ in pressure; and otherwise interchange in that the .38 Colt Automatic can be fird in the Super, though may not function well due to the much stronger spring in the Super.
The .380 ACP could conceivable be fired in the 38 Colt Automatic & Super, IF held by the extracor. I might attempt it in a dire emergency. The case woud be likely to split and could ruin the gun, and your day. Cheers.

please keep the suggestions coming in. i am not gonna buy the pistol tomorrow. i will be doing that in the next 3-4 months.....my idea is to hit the range and check them out first hand before i decide..... if any US based member has any previous experience with these pistols then pls do let me know.....

I think that is a very good idea.It is better if you try out the guns before you make your decision.

If you want to keep the handgun, then get one which suits your needs.If you are thinking of making some money, then as Abhijeet suggested, get a Beretta 81/84.Man, they are expensive here.

If you want to go crazy, get this one.

If you are willing to spend money in the region of US$1200-1300 then I'd say stretch a little bit further and get one of those sweet Les Baer Custom 1911 pistols (Google for more)... that way you only cry once!

If the budget is lower then get a Kimber, they are very nice especially for the price.

If you are thinking of a compact model in .45 ACP, please DO SHOOT IT FIRST and ensure that you are comfortable shooting that gun, else go for a calibre with a bit less power. A full size 1911 in .45 ACP is sweet to shoot, but the smaller variants can be a bit of a handful...

As to the rest, did a rethink about the Beretta recco and considering the fact that you cannot actually sell/ transfer the pistol you bring back on TR, you may as well go for the one you like the best... resale value being quite immaterial as you cannot sell it!

the m1911 forum suggests that the NHC are some of the best custom made 1911s.....
I live in california, so need to consider that as well, as some of the Les Baer ones were not available in CA

I may get a custom made one , will consider the kimber as well. thanx for your inputs.
