We don't have Varget over this side of the pond ...we have ADI 2208..which ....is sent to the USA and put into Varget containers ...exactly the same stuff. Actually quite a few Hodgdon powders come from Australia.

Not good mate ,it's blued but I'm not happy with the finish . The solution works well on older steel types but not so good on more modern stuff .I have to make a new batch ,and add a key ingredient ah-la Iron chef. This ingredient is mercuric chloride which is pretty much unobtainable over here these days,... BUT, I have some if it's still any good, it's been in my shed for about 30 years .Just have to get around to it ,still painting the house so everything else is on hold ATM ,my projects for May have all been shelved with house renovations and a wedding in which I have the honor of walking the bride up the aisle.
I have acquired a 1924 Lithgow Lee Enfield ,they only made just over 3000 of them that year so they're not common, waiting on paper work so I can take it home, finding the bits to restore it is going to be interesting ,also won a Portuguese model 98 Mauser 8 x 57 at the auctions ,that's on it's way here but again paper work will slow this down. Other projects already started are on track .

DM, first walk the bride down the aisle.Good luck and God Bless
Mercuric chloride-a bit extreme, I can understand-I searched for it about 22years ago
Now why am I getting tempted by a 6.5 swede and /or a 7.92x57 mauser? possible exams in the air, and I seem to function best under pressure and the vision of a plethora of rifles

Re: A 223 knock about rifle...
Yes she's the first one I'll walk the aisle with ,she's not my daughter she's my niece ,her father passed away some time ago so I'm next on the list as her favorite uncle
On the rifle front I have the strangest thing happening ATM ,some time ago I bought a Mauser 98 wreck ,it was in 303/25 of all things ,buggered if I know what the previous owner was thinking when he did that . Anyway I stole what I wanted off of it and tried to sell the rest with no takers.
so ,I'm sort of stuck with it. Anyway I'm thinking what to do with it and not getting any good idea's. Someone on Australian hunting net decides to make some spoon handle bolts in the BRNO style, so I bought a couple ,one for the Carcano and a spare ,so I have a spoon bolt handle for a Mauser if I wanted to use it for that , today I found a Redfield peep sight for a Mauser on evil bay ,it's coming to Australia
also there's a place in Canberra selling inexpensive Adams& bennett barrels ,they have a threaded and chambered barrel in 7 x 57 for about $150.00 which I will inquire about tomorrow so without any sort of plan this rifle is coming together .I'm just sitting back waiting to see what sort of stock will magically appear

Glad I checked before i knocked off-303/25? Thats certainly a strange beastie in a mauser, but stranger things have emerged from the bush I'm told
I am verrry interested in doing up a DIY mauser- 7.92 looks good now....Whats happening about barrels in O? just today i read about Pac Nor bbls available with rebelgunworks, next you pop up with adams& bennet-read good things about them. Can you point me to the spoon handle bolts, the A&B address (are they making anything in 404 or 416
) and a decent mauser action? I might just throw them all together in a Boyd's stock

I'm pretty sure he's got a few left, I did the deal through AHN but I know your a member of NitroExpress .Mention my name and he might charge you double.
http://www.shooters.com.au/default.asp
I have not dealt with these people before so I don't know how good they are ,they claim to stock Shilen , Douglas, Krieger and A&B ,just had a look , they list a 416 ,to access their list of barrels you click on universal gun parts and follow your nose ,these are barrel blanks .I'm looking at a 375 for a Lee Speed 375 2 1/2" and a chambered and threaded 7 x 57 for the Mauser, the C&T will save me a few $$ at the gunsmiths. I'd say your best bet for an action would be Owen guns, he lists quite a few ,if your going to open it up for a big case I have a spare bolt body that already has the face modified for the job.

Yup, Ron is larger than Life, but can take time off to pull out a Brno mod 1 stock to explain to a passing stranger (me) about how he would refinish it... and the part about suing the police commissioner and winning is in his latest owenguns news letter.
Thanks for that DM, lets see what happens

I really like the fact that you have a 223 to shoot. Nice shooting at 200 m. Is the ammo expensive? Post pics of the rifle when done.

I like the price, the gun, and the accuracy of this rifle, Asif. Thanks for posting, you have me thinking!

Dev, Whaddya mean done? it is done.I need to tighten the scope on, wait for a clear day and use that laddered loads in 69 and 75gr Amax and thats that.
Ammo? 8 bucks for Norinco 20 pack, 28bucks for federal 20 or roll your own, semi target (if there is such a term, if not I just made it up)about a buck each. will keep bullets touching at 100m, maybe even 200 if I do my part.Remington cases, fed/CCI small rifle primers (benchrest,if you please!!), ADI 2208 and 2209 powder.COAL ? 20 thou 'jump' for the 69 gr. The 1:9 twist seems to do well with the heavier bullets
Timmy, the rifle is inherently accurate, lighten the trigger or add a riflebasix or timney.Go with a Boyd's stock, Pillar and action bed it-5/8 threaded stock for the pillars or 30USD for a pillar bedding kit from Chad Dixon, Longrifles.com.Acraglas gel, westmarine, Devcon for the bedding-what ever you have...skinny barrel, so wait for it to cool between strings
go for it

Re: A 223 knock about rifle...
Asif, if I can ever get out of this place and get back home to the Land of Enchantment, I am thinking of having a nice rifle for prairie dogs. One of these in .223 or .22-250 looks like just the ticket! When I read this thread, I checked out the online information and the Savage/Stevens catalog. It takes quite a bit for me to get excited about anything that's not military surplus anymore, but you have got my wheels turning. I will not tell my Wife, so you will not be in trouble with the Department of War
