Re: TESTING MY BRAND NEW IOF 30-06 RIFLE
SAM,
There seems to be a bit of a gap between the mounts and the reciever. Did you use the original screws supplied with the mountts or replaced them with after market ones? Otherwise the rifle looks good. How do you plan to zero it? Laser sighter or the old sight-shoot-sight method?
Do post pics of the targets after the zero.

Katana

Samanjit,
Look up the thread of .315 compared to the .30-06 and them base your decisions. There are also various threads of the two rifles indivisually.

Thanks There is no gap inbetween the two and they are fitted very firmly to each other making sure there's no play inbetween the two parts,I have used after market stainless steel "M3" allen bolts since the original ones that come along with the bases are around 3.5mm and the provision made on the rifle receiver by the factory is for 3mm bolts, well now I am yet to decide on how to zero it, I may opt for the lazer bore sighter, will try to post some pic's of the targets after I zero the rifle.

Re: TESTING MY BRAND NEW IOF 30-06 RIFLE
do a simple bore sighting first
weld a flat metal piece 4x8 inch axially on a maruti scissor type jack Top end, where you would make contact with the chassis normally? 0.25 inch is about max thickness.Any scrap iron will do.
make a foam cushion about 1/2 inch thick for this platform, use it as your front rest and remove bolt.Ensure rifle is unloaded
keep a paper target at 25M and look thru the bore -move rifle accordingly until the target is centered in the bore. Now move scope crosshairs approx until they too are on the target centre.Hopefully you are zeroed at 25M. Now go out and fire 2-3 shots to see where they go, if close to the bore sighted area, and ON the paper, you know how much to move the cross hairs.
This in essence is the bore sighting procedure. With your BOX reticle, the same principle should apply...let us know, will be interesting

Re: TESTING MY BRAND NEW IOF 30-06 RIFLE
eljefe,
I guess what you mention is the same principle as the sighting vise. Actually me and a friend were really thinking of making a such a bench rest with such a sighting vise incorporated!
I have a lazer boresighter but my experience with the old fashion method has been good. Only the fact that you must keep making groups of 3-5 shots from 25m to 65m and ultimately 100m is the question. This, of course, requires a lot of patience and ammo! On the other hand, with the lazer one sights it in at the yardage required, confirm with a couple of follow up shots, minutely adjust and you are all set.
By the way, has one given a thought at which yardage would be ideal to zero the IOF? Assuming one uses a decent powered scope like 3-9x40 and shoots with S&B ammo?
Regards,
Katana

Re: TESTING MY BRAND NEW IOF 30-06 RIFLE
go to the Norma site-ballistic calculator available- hopefully you can learn to use it in a few minutes and get your zero info. Its like this when a bullet is fired, it goes from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches below the line of sight-depending on what mounts/sights /scope you are using, comes to ZERO a certain distance from the muzzle -say 25m, the again climbs and starts coming down for a second zero (THE ZERO) so, if you get the graphics from the norma site, you should be able to zero e.g a 165Gr bullet @25M m and it will be good for 200m also-this is a hypothetical example...

Re: TESTING MY BRAND NEW IOF 30-06 RIFLE
eljefe,
I'm quite aware of the ballistic characteristics of some of the ammunition, altough most of it studied and not really tried out by me. The reason I asked for the IOF specifically was that most of the guys here use Sellior and Bellot ammunition and that most .30-06's of various makes that I have seen and used have a 3-9x40 scope.
Now, I'm about to work out everythig for my IOF and was wondering if anyone had already studied the behaviour of this rifle/ ammo/ scope combo.
Regards,
Katana

Re: TESTING MY BRAND NEW IOF 30-06 RIFLE
Katana / SAM,
The way I sight in is simple, make a paper target first, for this take a 6-inch diameter red/orange circle pasted against a white background (plain chart paper will do nicely) put it up squarely facing the muzzle at 25 yards, the red/orange circle will perfectly cover the bore diameter of an '06 at this range, assuming your scope is set for correct eye-relief, the bases secured properly and the ring screws are nice and snug, now make sure the rifle is unloaded with the bolt removed from the receiver and set the rifle up in a solid rest such as an adjustable, padded vise which works superbly for this purpose, adjust the rifle to center the red/orange circle in the bore, now gently secure the rifle in the vise and adjust your scope's windage/elevation turrets until your reticle is centered onto the circle, do this the best you can and try to divide the circle into four equal parts with the crosshairs, given your scope has a standard duplex/fine reticle, this should pose no problem.
Once this is done, check and re-check to see if the crosshairs are centered on the circle when it is covered by the bore, now you should be printing on the paper when you try the rifle out at a 100 yards, you can then fine-tune as per your requirement. After this drill I usually shoot at 25 yards, adjust to point of aim and then re-zero at a 100 where I make it shoot 1.5" high above point of aim which gives me a MPBR (max. point blank range) about 220 yards with a 180-grain Federal PowerShok. That was easy, wasn't it!

"With solid bullets on heavy animals such as elephant, rhino and buffalo this power is quite apparent but is not so obvious as when soft-nose bullets are being used, say, lion, particularly when is a case of stopping a charge : the .404 will stop him all right, but will seldom crumple him quite so completely as will the .416" -- John Taylor, Big Game and Big Game Rifles, (Ch. IX)
