Rules for transporting air rifle / pistol in checked luggage

Can anyone throw light on the latest rules or regulations of various domestic airlines for transporting air rifles or air pistols in broken down condition (unloaded/empty, no pellets accompanying weapon, action and stock separated, properly packed) in checked luggage ?

Any airline/s expressly forbid this or any airline have a helpful attitude towards this type of transport ?

In one of the older posts, the ones we've lost after the site crash, someone posted his experiences with Indian airlines, who gave him a special metal tin to put his air pistol into and a receipt for the same.

with kingfisher/jet declare it in at the check in. may need to fill in a form, they will ask you to show them the item. they should give you a copy form and at the other end you give this in to ground staff who may be waiting with your baggage on the trolley. all seems to be very help ful.

I recently flew in spice jet with a air-pistol, from kolkata to bengalooru. Did not declare anything, you should have seen the person's face after passing my luggage through x-ray machine . But afterwards I had to show the pistol and the reciept (it was new) and he asked me to show the chamber (god knows why..) after that there was no problem at all. But while declaring, please say "toy" gun...this may help them to understand better. it was not in any knocked down condition or anything like that at all...

Declaring an airgun as a toy gun ? And then have an extended stay courtesy of the CISF, No thanks. He asked you to show the chamber because he knew what he was doing, he was ensuring that you air gun was not loaded. A very sensible thing to do anytime.....
