Rao Inderjit Singh (MP) speaks out for RKBA

During the motion of thanks in Lok Sabha today, the Hon'able Member of Parliament (from Gurgaon) and former Minister of State for Defence Production, Rao Inderjit Singh, spoke out in defence of the right to keep & bear arms. Amongst other things he mentioned Mahatma Gandhi's support for RKBA and brought to attention the fact that crimes are almost never committed using licensed firearms.

Am still trying to source the transcript of his speech, will post it here as soon as it becomes available.

Meanwhile, it should make to the highlight's of today's proceedings at 9 PM tonight on the Lok Sabha TV Channel.

Kudos to the Hon'able Member for publicly raising an important issue and (hopefully) initiating a debate on this!

That's brilliant !! We need that. We need people in political power ! I know it sounds terrible and for most Indians, out right immoral. But the fact can not be denied. The most dent we can make is with people in the system. NRA is so effective in the United States cause going against them hurts, politically. We have to reach that level.

This just might be the first step. I would also request the senior members to consider contacting the Minister and let him know of us and our heartfelt support.

Senior members of the shooting fraternity are already in touch with him, in fact Rao Inderjit Singh is himself an international shooter of repute. There can be no doubts that he truly believes in this cause.

Cong member's remarks evokes Oppn guffaws

New Delhi, Mar 3 (PTI) Congress member Rao Inderjit Singh's remarks in the Lok Sabha today provided the Opposition opportunities to have hearty laughs, leaving the ruling party flummoxed.

Moving a motion of thanks to the President's address, Singh said the governments' efforts to bring about accountability in bureaucracy during UPA's earlier tenure had met with resistance among bureaucrats.

"Bureaucrats are a breed of their own. They think that the current Prime Minister will not remain in the chair in the next government. So they swept the file (on accountability) under the carpet thinking when the next Prime Minister takes over, it will all be forgotten," Singh said.

The remark invited peals of laughter and thumping of desks by the Opposition members. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present in the House then.

The Opposition benches continued to have a good laugh, when the Congress MP, later in his speech, said Home Minister P Chidambaram was "doing a better job now than he did as Finance Minister" in the UPA's previous regime.

Again, talking about a Home Ministry proposal to regulate weapons licencing, the he said the government should not deny people the legal right to own personal arms and that it should aim at containing proliferation of illegal arms.

"Only two per cent of the 40 million weapons in the country are legal, the rest are illegal," he said, evoking laughter and thumping of the desks.

This is really good. At least someone is "speaking" for RKBA in Parliament. Hopefully we will have more voices in support.

Why were they laughing on this?

Because the Arms Act 1959 in itself is a joke played with the people of our country. Congress was agitating all along during the freedom struggle against Arms Act 1878(Ref: http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?t=1625). It had declared RKBA to be incorporated as a Fundamental Right in "any" constitution during Karachi session. In Nagpur in 1923 or 1924 there was a Satyagraha movement against the Arms Act and this Satyagraha movement attracted Satyagrahis from all over-India. When it came to power, all voices of reason were ignored and it replaced Arms Act 1878, with similar repainted version Arms Act 1959. If one reads it carefully it is nothing but a very cleverly written article of good faith overloaded with "vice of over delegation" handed over to the executive. In other words anything in it can mean everything or nothing at the pleasure of executive.

i'm very pleased to see mr. singh's remarks in your parliment, its a beginning, however small, and hopefully the debate will continue and grow. as has been pointed out, many times, in many places, it is not the law abiding gun owner that needs to be feared, nor the gun itself, which is only an instrument, with no will or volition of its own. it is the criminal and terrorist who uses a gun for evil that is the problem, and they can, and will get their guns, and other weapons, no matter what laws parliments pass. self defense that mr. singh spoke of is the oldest natural right of man, going back to times when stones and clubs were the only weapons against both animal and human predators. times have changed and man with them, but we still have the huuman predators, and the right, and need, for arms to protect ourselves and our society against them.

I am glad and ofcourse thankful to Rao Sahib for his initiative, to highlight illegal weapons floating around, in Parliament. I wish we could convey our support to him and his thoughts through an appropriate medium !
