Ideal power for Pest control?
Hello Friends,
I am new here and would like to get started on my desire to buy a gun, air gun to begin with which will be used for pest control and some target practice.
What would be the ideal fps for a humane kill at a decent yardage?say about 40-60 yds and which gun would be best.
Want to get an imported air gun, but kind of apprehensive about rules of importing one, esp a .22 cal.
How is the BSA lightning or HW97K or Diana Magnum? Some guns are scope killer i hear so some input on these would be helpful.
Just wish one day "Indian for Guns" would be as popular as NRA.
Thanks
Amer

Re: Ideal power for small game or Pest control?
With hunting banned in India, "small game" ought to be off your list. Please edit your post. Cheers.

The only pest control you can do in India is rats and crows....
Only import of .177 caliber air rifles is allowed.
Suggest you go through this site to know more....

As an example of overcoming adversity, Karoly Takacs has few peers. He was part of Hungary’s world champion pistol-shooting team in 1938, when an army grenade exploded, crippling his right hand. Ten years later, having taught himself to shoot with his left, he won two gold medals in the rapid-fire class.

I guess the link provided below will help you in your pursuit..

Now for the best Indian made Air Rifle to do the job ..Well Gurus have already voted IHP/National Mod 35 as the best..you can go throgh the thread starded by me on same subject!!
Now for the Technicalities:
Various studies conducted by IFG Gurus clearly indicates muzzle velocity of IHP's .177 cal Model 35 at around 650fps..Now bearing in mind that you are only allowed to kill Vermins/Pest that includes Rats, mice and mouse in India..I guess the IHP's above mentioned model is a fair air rifle for pest control upto 30-35 yards..Though again one can debate between IHP's .177 and .22 cal Air Rifle as the later caliber can deliver more punch (energy) to your target but then again you have to keep the muzzle velocity and pellet trajectory in mind...177 cal pellet sure has a flatter trajectory when compared to .22 cal pellet..And for humane kill you need to take Head shots in which case .177 cal has a distint advantage over.22 cal..I am sure gurus will soon come out with velocity studies conducted on IHP's .22 Cal Model 35 Air rifle, If not already done which help in better comparison studies!! Dare I add..while killing smaller vermin like crow, mice and rats precision is more important then punch!!!
Happy Shooting

Re: Ideal power for Pest control?
I fully agree that a 650 fps is enough velocity for a humane kill. Regardless of what you are shooting, it better be a head shot for a humane kill rather than shooting 2,3 or even 5 shots to make the kill which is extremly sad. Make one shot, on the head while taking enough time.
For a head shot any cal is enough....dont throw away money buying a 1100 fps .177 which will zip thru the body and will confuse you that you may have missed and take 2-5 shots until that animal bleeds and curses you.
Just take a head shot.....boom.
(speaking from experience here)
-Humane shooting please

Re: Ideal power for Pest control?
Do you have wild chickens running in the forest? If yes, then hunting them might be illegal, since it would be hard to define them as pest. Unless you are referring to the villianous chicken from outer space that appeared in the pilot episode of the "courage the cowardly dog show"
On a serious note, chicken is DOMESTICATED fowl. Killing it for soup is hardly hunting, which is the pursuit of wild prey.
