Friends,
Having used both these calibers extensively, I would not hesitate to say that a 7.9x57 mm rifle is as good if not better in every way as the 30-06. The difference of few fps or few foot lbs of terminal energy here and there do not matter to what so ever is on the receiving end. Maybe not as common as 30-06 but, I believe the ammo made by S&B is available for 8mm Mauser.
In my opinion, an 8mm Mauser in the condition described is any day better then an IOF 30-06 with an alloy receiver action.
