Stronger though it is, can carbon fibre be cut through easier than steel wire?

Would you by any chance have an old disused seat belt lying around? If so, could you try cutting through it with a very sharp plain edged and serrated edge blade and let us know the result - number of push and pull strokes to cut through the belt with the force used being more or less the same with both blade types.

If you have box cutters to hand try those as well.

penpusher, I have that knife in black grip. Its more of a hunting knife but dont expect to skin a deer with it...

For all practical purpose, the best 24 hour carry knife is a victorinox or a wenger. There are many versions, many sizes and many prices. Just find the right one for you. Visit the Victornox showroom at CP inner circle if you are in Delhi. I am sure you will get what you are looking for. HAve been carrying a victorinox (7 application) for 15 years now. Never failed me.

For the second comment... I have seen some fighting knives without pronounced handguards and similar grips... will tell you the names. Have to go thorugh my books. I have a pretty bad memory these days

Rusty, I do in fact have one lying around... I think it was from an old GM car... anyhow, I did cut it using a regular cutter... this was a vain attempt at morphing it into... oh, don't even ask! It's tough material - but a sharp edge makes quick work of it...

Seconded, thirded, fourthed and so on. I have been carrying one since 1977. Now that Vic owns Wenger they should use the Wenger sciccor and pliers on their models. Never did like their flimsy spring.

Not sure what you mean by regular cutter. If not a knife and you still have that seat belt lying around could you bring it along on the fishing trip. Would like to see how the Moran and more importantly the Swiss Army Knife lade deals with it.

Thanks for the advice. Will check up about the Muela knife.Have never really liked folding knives. Somehow have the feeling that it just might fold up and cut/cut off my finger. However a folder just might be the more practical option. Victorinox knives are easily available in Chandigarh.Are they sharp as they come or do they need to be sharpened ?

What do the mechanics call a spring loaded punch? Would make it easier to explain to the shopkeeper/helper what I want.Have a thick stick with a heavy metal head that I think would be sufficient to smash through the side glass if ever the need so arises.

As far as carrying a knife goes,it's easier for me.Religious sentiments and all that

just that I've been under the rock and slime awhile now and in the dark...no pedestal, respect your opinion.I probably use blades on living flesh more tha many people, but am kind of lost after Tull and Floyd-same applies to knifeology! Once in a while -a peek of britney Spears!!;)

I can post a snap-Got mine from Blr-cost me 120 rupees.Its a hardened spike in a cylinderical metal body, as you press down with it, it cocks it self and spike fires a few mm. I think its called a center punch-you dont need to keep the specialised chisels [that were used as center punch] and tap with a hammer to get a dent to start drilling-this one does it with a sustained pressure.
As for seat belts, none will stand upto a decent knife-tried with a sharpened hack saw blade, Leatherman, Spyderco-delica and police models and lastly with a chinese made 'break blade' cutter [available from any stationery or corner shop] stumbled upon this as it was lying in the glove box...there are special 5 in 1 tools used by paramedics in US to break open automobile glass and a plastic covered blade with a sharpened slot to slip onto a seat belt and cut it...moral of the story -Dont keep a prized/expensive knife in the car-I lost my Spyderco Police model, which I have been carrying from S Africa, a while ago.Any good Swiss will be fine.Yes, if you can carry the Moran as a Kirpan, nothing like it!:):)

There are many folders that are lockable in the open position. Locks come in various guises - back lock, frame lock, liner lock, etc. The Manix uses a back lock and from memory, I think it take something like 2 tons of pressure for the lock to fail.

The Swiss Army Knife blades are very sharp out of the box but not scary sharp. These are nonlocking blades so be careful. If you want a locking blade get the Victorinox Swiss Tool Plus with the sheath and keep it on your belt - it's a bit heavy for the trouser pocket.

Buy a Victorinox pocket or table top sharpner whilst you are at the shop. Don't buy one of their sharpening steels unless you know how to use one well.

Rusty, to answer your questions.... Ok, don't laugh... but when I was in college... early 90's I lifted weights for some months... damn! I can hear the snickers already!

Anyhow - while I didn't beef up any, I did try variations of belts, to protect my back, this was just another vain attempt at making a decent lifting belt... which I abandoned rather quickly... it's still lying around somewhere... Will dig it out in time for your trip... cut it up, burn it... whatever... it's quite useless anyhow...

About regular cutters... I was talking about the stuff you get at stationary shops... As an architect you would be quite familiar with them... we used to use them to cut sheets etc. in our technical drawing/ engineering drawing classes in school.... BTW the friend I have joining us on the 28th is also an architect... albeit a conservation architect...
