Getting an air rifle to India

Post by highland sniper » Wed Jul 15, 2009 2:14 am

Hi all,

I'm a new member here and before I pose my question, I must compliment all the members for this very nice forum. I'm sure its very nice to have this community to get opinions, answers and advice.

I'm an expat indian considering moving back to India. Please, help me understand if its legal to bring air rifles with me. I'm planning to get one break barrel and one pneumatic pump with me. No particular reason for why these two types, just that I dont like CO2 guns :-). I haven't decided on the brands yet but would definitly like to get something high velocity. Any suggestions based on experience of the members here would be welcome. I'll buy the guns in Dubai. I dont intend to use these for hunting, just for target practice. I learnt from one of the posts that there is a shooting club in Dwarka, where I'll eventually live. Are there also any amateur shooting competitions where one can test there skills?

Another question is about pellets, is it possible to buy Gamo, crossman or any other international brand of pellets in India? If yes, then are these sold online?

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Thanks Vikram, this is very helpful. I was perhaps going to get Benjamin Super Streak but after reading this I am not sure.

Does anyone has prior experience of getting a high velocity rifle in their baggage. I always fly Emirates to India and I've read that they are a bit easy on taking sports rifles in the cargo load.

Another point, I'm not a member of any Rifle club at the moment, can I just get the rifle as checked in baggage when travelling to india for a short visit?

Hi Thomas,

I'm still working out on the membership of the DSRA. Based on the other posts on IFG, it seems getting a .177 and .22 into India is a lesser challange if you are a member. A large part of course depends on the Customs officer you meet at the airport. I've also read in some post (cant remember the name of the member) that he could travel to Banagalore with his Air Rifle without any real hassel. Looks like a lot of ppl are taking to the sport and this means better informed customs officials. If you are already a member of some Rifle Association and have your membership documents in original with you, it should be pretty much as explained by others.

Good luck and do share your experience.
