Jeweling !!!

Post by marksman » Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:41 pm

Hey guys,
Can any one help me out with this. I intend Jeweling the bolt of my rifle and the barrel hood of my pistol. Is there any one within India who could do this? Also, are there any artisans left in India who'd engrave on a fire arm? I am sure the strict gun laws must have killed this profession during the "Raj" itself. I am inclined to say this because I happened to see a beautiful 45 Cal.muzzle loader that was built in Rampur with the quality work and engraving on it that was at par with H&H or Purdey. It originally belonged to the royal family of Holkars of Indore.

Marksman,

There was a detailed discussion to that effect on IFG.Use the search function.I will give it a go too.I would really really be loath to hand my guns,if I have any, to someone unless there is good proof that the person is a good craftsman.

The subject was interesting. I recall seeing a jeweled rifle bolt many years ago that I thought looked pretty nice.
I did a quick search to see what was involved, and came up with the following:
http://www.gunsandammomag.com/cs/Satell ... +Jeweling+

From Guns&Ammo magizine. There's a few pictures, but the article is best seen on the site. If you find an "old school" watchmaker or machinist, they may have the patience & knowledge.

Marksman,

Do you want to embed jewels or jewel the bolt? If it's the latter, Midway USA have a short video on the subject and it does not look difficult in the least. A little practice on a steel tube and you should get the hang of it.

If you find a machine shop with a good, solid drill press and a good guide system and a skilled machinist, I'm sure you can print out instructions online and take it to him.

Here's one

Search for other threads on this same sight that deal with jeweling. They're pretty detailed instructions.

Seems some of you have misunderstood the term "Jewelling" The jewelling I mentioned involves embossing of a swirl pattern on the bolt of the rifle with the help of a special jig. Besides enhancing the rifle 's appearance aesthetically, it also retains the lubrication on the bolt. This can be done on pistols as well.
