Also, I would like some advice on the handgun that I'll be buying. My budget is low and the IOF .32 revolver is my last option. Anyone guiding me on this shall do me a very big favour.
No problem at all....IFG forum is to help gun lovers get their love..
I will PM you details about handling the situation.
As far as Revolver is concerned ,i m not the right person,i m into rifles more and not handguns.

In India, we don't have much choice at the moment except .32 revolver or pistol. .32 Pistol gives slightly higher bullet velocity compared to .32 revolver, but is slightly complicated to use compared to revolver.

Hi all - newbie here. I'm a USian and resident of the great state of Tennessee. After reading some of the posts and Abhijeet's fine site, I have a few questions, as I may be doing an expatriate assignment in Pune for 3 years.

1. As far as the criminal background check is concerned, does anyone know if my Tennessee handgun carry permit would serve to show that I'm not a criminal? Also, would proof of an honorable discharge as a USAF officer matter to any of the Indian bureaucrats?

2. I currently carry a CZ-82 (9x18 Makarov). I have seen postings that say this is NPB. I have also seen that I could bring this in under a tourist license. Is coming with it under a tourist license and then upgrading to an all India license possible for my extended stay? If so, does anyone know as to the availability of this caliber?

Thanks!

Chad

hi Chad
criminal background check is done by the local police here in India, so your Tennessee permit is pointless and useless, as you have to comply with Indian laws and not USA laws.

honorable discharge is again pointless as its not Indian, even if it was till still gives you no guarantee at all.

Chad, you have to think like the babus of the world around, is Indian arms license has any leeway in the state? does honorable discharge from forces of India have any leeway in the state and will the local USA police take that into account or would they want to do their own investigation for criminal record?

9x18 is hard to get hold off, very hard as i have already tried to find some but noting in the pipeline.
tourist license is one time issue only for 6months, try to get clarification from Indian Embassy before hand in writing ie 6 months before arriving.

you can not upgrade to all India license but have to apply fresh one.

you would be better to do a TR if you can, try to get the Indian license in place first if possible.

sorry not much positive help to you as we are bound by the Arms Act here.

if you say it can not be done, then you are right, for you, it can not be done.

Hello Chad,
There are no reciprocal handgun carry privileges between India and the USA.I don't know if aside from active law enforcement pursuing overseas cases in friendly countries and military allies this sort of privilege even exists for civilians even in friendly countries.

Anyway, while your Tennessee license and your record of honourable discharge may provide additional proof of your previous non-criminal status, getting a firearm license on that strength alone would not be possible. So at best these may provide to create a better impression with the authotities here. At worst, an ex-military person from a foreign country may be treated with suspicion (I am only guessing).

AFAIK The license issued to foreigners is only valid for a period of 6 months and is issued only in the case of sporting use for shooting competitions and is issued only once and cannot be renewed after 6 months. If your stay in India is going to be for three years then a Transfer of Residence (TR) is probably the best way to bring in a firearm of Non Prohibited Bore (NPB) along with no more than 50 cartridges. Imported (old stock).380 ACP cartridges are available although at exorbitant cost, so if at all possible, that might be the caliber you would bring apart form calibers:.32 ACP and .32 S&W Long, and .22LR.

It is difficult even for citizens who are returning on TR to complete the process, I dont know of a foreigner who moved to India to have ever succeeded in this endevour. That does not mean you should give up or not try. The primary problem, aside from the normal reluctance to give licenses to citizens(discretionary/may issue system), is in the case of foreigners, the authorities here will have to rely on foreign authorities for verification, which I will presume they are reluctant to do. So many more things are stacked against you. But, there is no rule that licenses be issued only to citizens.

Another thing, as you may already know US citizens are eligible to temporarily export firearms form the US and bring them back to the US. As far as I know the maximum allowed period for this is something like 4 years(I may be confusing this with something else so please verify)

My understanding is that the system exists in both our countries for you to be able to do this. You will just have to try.
Best of luck,
Regards,
Anand

hi,

its great article, but sorry to say, because i dont think that we can have license less then 1000/- Rs.

as i talk to my relative who has license and he tell me that i have to spend more then 50000/- only For license.

what happen if i legally follow the process and didnt spend a single Rs out of that.

one more thing, if they failed me and refuse to provide license that what is the chance for me, can i reapply for that.

waiting for your reply

Can anyone give details of a lawyer or agent who helps in acquiring a sword's license in Delhi? As getting them from ebay is a hassle, but if you have a license then its not a problem to buy things online! And its a hassle at licencing unit in Delhi.

If someone knows any agent or a lawyer do let me know!

Thanks in advance!

Pay the fees for additional endorsement of NPB Rifle and NPB shotgun at LA Ludhiana's office. Once it is endorsed on your license or issued 2 additional license booklets, you can purchase the mentioned firearms.
