Carry what you are comfortable with, and will be able to use effectively under stress.
It really doesnt matter if its a Colt Walker or FN 57... complete reliability and effective use is what will count.
The rest really doesnt matter..

A revolver no doubt! Even if the cartridge misfires you can always thumb cock and fire the next round, that too single handedly!!!

Both weapons are excellent, the revolver will never jam, yet if it is snub nosed, then you will have to grip it with both hands. A Pistol also need to be gripped with both hands, but it can jam, when you need it the most. To avoid jamming, you need to take care that the magazine, receiver and lips of the magazine are well oiled and cleaned.
But ultimately, it is the man behind the gun that counts!

Personal preference is the major factor

But............I think a revolver would be better because of the following reasons:

1) Less parts means simple mechanism and less maintainence

2) Revolvers are not fussy about ammo you can fire long ,short

3) I have found that revolver have less recoil as I have fired 9mm pistol and .38 revolver and found that .38 revolver has much less recoil or jump

4) As mentioned by many others a jam can be cleared easily in a revolver

pistols get stuck, fire blanks, are bulky and need more maintanence

revolvers can't be fired concealed, but u r not CIA!!!

In an Indian context, with an ammo 'ration' of 25 rounds per year? which translates to ZERO practice, High 'fumble in the dark' capability, I'd stand by the revolver :deadhorse:

Friends,
In a situation where you are being throttled (or raped) by a homicidal maniac , If you have a revolver you will be able to singlehandedly take off the safety and fire into the BG. If you have a pistol, you will never be able to rack the slide and fire into him since that requires use of both hands and even the dumbest BG will not give you a chance to do that. I think that settles the matter in favour of revolvers.

If you allow a homicidal maniac to come close enough to begin throttling/raping you, then I daresay it will be too late for a revolver or a pistol. Close combat, hand to hand fighting with small arms don't seem to gel well. Knives?

I guess the best defence is to attack...throttle the throttler, (can't say rape the rapist can I  )

Hey open sight, wake up, the safety wallah revolvers are extinct-Precisely why we are having this talk around the campfire. As for racking the slide -can be done one handed-if you practice enough and dont mind a deep scratch on the buttock or thigh

Just wondering why you would prefer a double action pistol? Not that there is anything wrong with it. Please note that I am not denigrating your choice. I would like you to elaborate on your statement. What is your justification for the choice? Why a double action as opposed to a DA/SA type of pistol or a striker fired pistol.

Wouldn't it depend on your level of training or familiarity with a particular weapon? For example, if you are not familiar with clearing a misfeed or jam in a pistol, then wouldn't you be better off with a revolver? There is a lot to be said for the simplicity of a revolver. Remember, I'm not saying that you made a bad choice. I would just like to encourage some discussion of your viewpoint.

I personally carry a DA/SA type of pistol with one up the spout. It does me no good to carry a pistol if it is not loaded and ready to go. With the multiple safeties that most modern pistols have, there is no chance of the gun going off if I keep my finger off the trigger. My pistol sits in a rigid leather holster on my hip and the trigger guard is covered. It cannot go off till I draw it and pull the trigger. However, that might not be what someone else prefers.

that is very good point. what matter most is time you need deploy your pistol/revolver.

A lot of police killed around the globe by knives, they trained to rely on their firearm, but in most urban close quarter combat, question is if you can shoot at least once before you will killed by skilled guy with a knife. Hand gun is good when you have some distance between you and attacker. In distance 2-4 meters you do not a chance even to make one shoot. In 6-8 meters one shot is possible from open holster and if gun is chambered, but still you will be cut any way.
If I would be choosing a gun and holster type, how fast I can make a shot, would be the main criteria.
Perhaps Glock is one of the best in this regard.

Many shooters in the US practice using or are at least aware of the Tueller Drill. The goal of the drill is to enable you to get off two shots before the bad guy can get to you from 7 yards (6.4m). As Subal says, anything closer and you're going to get cut. When taking classes on self defense using a handgun, instructors will also constantly talk about your state of awareness. Part of good self defense is being aware of your surroundings and this is the base that you can build your self defense strategy on. If you are aware of your surroundings, you might have an extra second or two to react.
If I would be choosing a gun and holster type, how fast I can make a shot, would be the main criteria.
Perhaps Glock is one of the best in this regard.
I'm not a Glock man. I tried but they feel very awkward to me. I felt like I was holding a 2X2 (a piece of lumber 2 inches x 2 inches). The grip felt square and the pistol would not point well for me. I also happen to think that Glocks are Ugh-Lee! I like the grip on the CZ75 and CZ75 clone pistols. SIG's also fit me pretty well. As far as comparing a striker fired pistol like the Glock to other pistols, it does take some getting used to a DA/SA pull but after a while, one doesn't even think about it. I don't see why deploying and firing one couldn't be as fast as a striker fired pistol . The advantage that the striker fired pistol has is that every pull of the trigger is consistent. With the DA/SA, the transition from the DA pull to the SA pull gives some people problems but that is only for the first shot. In the end it comes down to practice, practice and more practice.

As far as holsters go, I prefer mine to be rigid, firmly attached to the belt, have good retention and yet allow an easy draw. I also prefer Leather over Kydex.
In the end it comes down to practice, practice and more practice to reduce the time required for drawing and firing the first shot.
