Re: Slugs in shotguns
Well, Mark, wouldn't that be what some "experts" consider ideal performance? All the energy expended in the animal, and the expanded projectile under the hide on the far side? Got you the deer, didn't it. Slugs aren't really designed for deep penetration. Too much surface area for the weight. Cheers.

A few dealers in Delhi have them from time to time.....though imports of 12 G ammo is prohibited......must be via the shooters /TR/import via personal baggage route...they are expensive anywhere bet 150-200 a pop....Ace_doc wrote:where to get the slugs u mentioned and for how much?
Clever Mirage is available quite easily for around 130/-

Next time try Garg Armoury, Kashmere Gate, Delhi - they usually have a good selection of ammo and their rates are amongst the lowest, besides you will find the owner to be an extremely polite and helpful gentleman.Ace_doc wrote:i was had man ! payed 200 bucks per for CM slugs.

Re: Slugs in shotguns
Hi
I am no champ. No new license has quota for it, but those who have old license, I mean really old. In those there were separate quota for Slugs and normal.
I remember my grand father license having those and when he transfered the Gun to me, we asked for the same for the Ammo. In that he said it can be done for the Normal ammo and not for the Slugs/Balls.
So we used then jst like those for fun. But they were damn powerfull one 3".
As for the power and accuracy, my grand father had shot Indian Gaur (Bison) using Holland & Holland ball in his H&H Paradox 12 Bore, that too with a single neck shot. I will try to dig out the picture of that hunt.
before any one jumps to conclusion of banning me
, this was around 1943 -1945.
So that should tell about it

Re: Slugs in shotguns
I enjoy firing slugs I did fire power co slug last year from60 mts it penetrated iron pole and tin please u can watch my earlier post . Yes there is difference between Shaktiman and mirage slug . I repented I missed out very good mirage slugs last year at 90 rupees per piece fully covered and slugs rifled one r very handy during extreme emergency situations although I will think twice before even using even in case of extreme danger to my life or limb as these slugs can badly maime the targeted invader. So particularly my girlfriend(mygun) has become more attractive and smart and slugs drift but not much.

Re: Slugs in shotguns
I read Hawks' article posted on slugs. One thing I question in his article is the statement: "And, like a shuttlecock, it is its weight forward balance that allows the Foster slug to fly through the air to its target with reasonable accuracy. Compared to lead balls, this was a big improvement in both accuracy and SD."
I've got an interesting reloading article from a number of years ago, where the writer used an old Martini-Henry action to make up a 12 gauge ball gun. He rebarreled it with a 12 gauge barrel that had no choke whatsoever. My understanding regarding the design of conventional USA slugs is that they are designed with a Minie Ball principle because a slug of any design cannot be of bore size diameter due to the choke.
Anyway, this fellow got a mold from Dixie Gun Works, which used to offer simple, old fashioned molds without sprue cutters. These molds were available in sizes in 0.001" steps and were inexpensive.
The problem here is that reloading shotguns is not like reloading for rifles -- you have to follow the suggested component composition exactly. The author dealt with that by using the monstrously strong Martini-Henry action and by having Hornady, if I recall correctly, run pressure tests on his loads.
He coated the lead balls with liquid lubricant and reported excellent accuracy results.
I would love to try this myself, but the only suitable shotgun I have is a 16 gauge 520 Stevens pump, which has been cut down to 18". I don't have loads for this, so it remains only an interesting pipe dream.
However, I would find it interesting to see just what difference there actually is between a hollow base "Minie Ball" type of projectile and a spherical ball. I remain to be convinced that the "Shuttlecock" type of projectile really would offer any useful accuracy advantage over the practical range in view here.
