Peculiar ammo quota question

Hi,

As some may know I had bought a .32 revolver earlier this year which I sold for a .22 pistol last month.

I had used up 80 cartridges of my annual 250 quota when I had the .32 revo. Now a dealer tells me that since I sold that revo and bought another gun my quota starts all over again from 0 to 250 and not 81 to 250. Another dealer tells me this is hogwash, the quota is annual and me changing guns doesn't matter.

So who is correct and who isn't?

Isn't the quota for a particular bore? Like my license is endorsed for 250/500 .22 LR.
If that is the case then the first dealer may be right.

I think the first dealer is right.In your licence,you will find a column:"Quantity description of each kind of ammunition" which is sub-divided into :"max to be possesed at any time" & "max purchasable during each year".
So,you are entitled to posses 250 cartridges of each kind of ammo for which your licence is valid.
In short,0-250 .

There is a specific limit on the ammo quote on 'per firearm basis'. Assuming you have 2 weapons on your license, you will have 2 quotas mentioned in the license.

If you have one weapon endorsement, you will need to dispose off all the remaining .32 ammo and get fresh .22 ammo, as per the quota limit.

I have a NPB pistol/revolver permission on my license. Quota is 50/250. I buy a .32 revo and use 80 of the yearly quota; I sell it off and buy a .22 pistol. So now my the remainder of the quota for the year is 170 or 250?

Dev, Raj; think or sure ?

I called a local Gun shop Owner & he says you still have 250 cartridges for your new(.22) weapon.

Well here the question is of common sense than a legal interpretation . since my friend Amk has bought the second weapon which is under the same category i.e. NP bore pistol/revolver so the annual quota remains exhausted by 81 rounds and he is eligible to buy the remaining quota 169 rounds.

Obviously 170 because you are under one quota for which the ammo limit is specified, irrespective of the change of weapon type...

When lesser mortals have to live with limits like 10,25, 50 etc.. why are you worried.. use 170 first then lets worry of the remaining 81 limit.. hopefully the year might get over by then and you will for sure have 250 limit for the next yr.

Its like comparing should I have scotch or champagne .. when the rest of the world is told to be happy with old monk

Yes, many renowned shots have an unlimited quota. You can also get this (unlimited) endorsement if you are particularly well connected.

AMK, your query is a rather interesting one. To be frank I hadn't even thought about this sort of a situation before, though I guess it must be common enough... Logically there is a flaw in the reasoning in favour of 250 (remaining on your quota), as if we were to follow that reasoning then if you had bought another .32 cal as a replacement you would be left with a remaining yearly quota of 170 but since you bought a .22 you start afresh with the entire quota of 250. Doesn't really add up... I am not entirely sure, but logic dictates that the remaining quota should be 170.

Diskaon, if dealer 2 is correct I have used up 230 out of my quota, if dealer 1 is correct I have used up 150. Give me a quota of 5000 for .22LR and I'll blow that up in a year too

Abhi, logic does dictate that both the .22 and .32 I have already purchased should count together. But Tahir Arms is insisting that my quota starts afresh if I change my gun (to a new caliber). Best thing would be to ask the Arms dept. at the Comm of Police's office.
