Rimfire
Few days ago I shot my .22 after a very long time. When looked into my ammo bag I realized how ammo options have changed even for the little rimfire. When I was learning to shoot in Belgaum, Karnataka 28 years ago, I used only one kind of ammo, the soft lead . Every time I pick up my BRNO it reminds me of the days when as a boy I played with a rimfire and wish those days would come back.
Few I found in my bag.....

The third one from the left is a Remington Viper hyper velocity. Unlike the others this one is not a softpoint but solid and will not flatten out and fail to penetrate when it hits bone or skull of larger animals (larger for a rimfire).
Yes all of them can be fired from any gun capable of firing the .22 LR.

Just some more info. The Remington hyper velocity in the same configuration with a hollow nose is called Yellow Jacket. It was made initially to compete with the then introduced CCI Stingers and later on the solid nose version shown above was introduced. Both happen to give satisfactory results on small game. The accuracy though is not at par with normal 40grn high velocity ammo IMHO.

Matter of fact, in the ammo that I have tried, there is distinctly different grouping sizes between variations of rounds and its batches. I have this thought that there is a fine understanding between a gun's barrel and the ammo used. If they gel, and gel well, there is a nice constant recoil with good accuracy...
I have also noticed that one rifle's (ammo-) grouping is another rifle's (ammo-) spreading

Two quick points: A "softpoint" is a jacketed bullet with exposed lead point. Since .22 RF bullets are not jacketed, they are not softpoints, but solids.
While the hyper-velocity .22 RF cartridge are considered less accurate, the can easily be the most accurate load in some rifles. .22 Rimfire rifles are quite particular as to the ammo they do best with. For best accuracy it definitely pays to try every available brand of cartridge . But clean the barrel before switching and don't forget a fouling shot. Cheers.

Re: Rimfire
TwoRivers - I meant to say hollow point and not soft point, you are correct about the soft point. The viper is specifically referred to as truncated cone solid by Remington and the others as hollow points. There is also one referred to as yellow jacketed.
Remington rimfire specs.
I think the viper is copper plated ? There are jacketed .22 Rimfires (like this .22 WRF) but I have not seen any in .22 LR.

I thought the Geneva convention was not applicable for .22 class of ammo. Only the bigger caliber was supposed to have a jacket... not sure thoughTwoRivers";p="56376 wrote: ... to comply with the Geneva convention. Cheer.
