airguns by road?

Anyone have experience transporting air rifles by road inside India? Sounds absurd? Well I've lost a chance of owning several rifles recently simply because the sellers are afraid of police trouble at border checkpoints. Can someone clarify?

A friend of mine has brought back airguns from Chennai a couple of times. Did not have any problem at all. The check post guys hardly ever check private vehicles.

GATI and SAFEXPRESS, both developed chicken feet when I wanted an air rifle to be moved from Hyderabad to Pune...WE CANNOT TAKE THE RISK...that is what they told me...

We are regularly getting our supplies (including firearms and ammunitions) from neighboring town of Pathankot in Punjab, across the interstate border and have never been scrutinized. Look at the apathy of policing in these two very sensitive states. For how long do you think can disasters be avoided in the given circumstances ?

I brough my New IHP-National 35 Air rifle from New Delhi to Jammu (J&K ) about two months back. Not once did anybody enquire about the content of the box !!! Actually nobody seemed to notice. This callousness and laidback attitude onthe part of the security agencies is very unfortunate and actually scaring

No one is going to ask .when i went to punjab for pre-nationals kerala team had to stop at delhi to get connection train that to on dec 6 ,eventhough we had the papers no one asked

Most state checkposts do not pose a problem, other than when entering states where something is banned from bringing in or taking out (like liquor - from Goa, and to Kerala, etc), or if the route poses possible easy smuggling (like wood, etc), and mostly for routes that are via vital forest area (check for hunting, etc). Other than this, based on intelligence and such, certain 'Naka Bandhis' may be set up, requiring for complete vehicle inspection. In any and all the above, if proper papers are at hand, and if the cop knows that air guns do not pose a threat, it may be hot knife in butter. Some places, the authorities may only create a problem looking for some under-the-desk resource. Also, I have noticed that the cops dont always check every vehicle unless its in a terrorist-like emergency. They usually rely on their first impression, and a decent family with a clean shaven sober middle aged man at the wheels seem to pass unnoticed
However, all the above is very generic, and there will surely be a lot of variation from state to state.

The search is over! As of today, I am the proud owner of my first non-Indian air rifle for nearly three years. With the kind help of a well-informed IFG member, I today purchased a nice HW90 with the Theoben gas-ram in .22. I bought a Bushnell Sportsman 3-9 X 40 scope and a scope-stopper at the same time and a bunch of heavy pellets. So far, the gun is shooting like a dream. There's a glitch in the safety/trigger mechanism, but with a new unit I hope that will disappear. I'm hitting quite a few bullseyes and getting 2" groups at 25 meters (the only range I shoot at). So who knows, tonight I may take my first rat with the new gun!
Thanks for being so patient with me while I tore my hair out, trying to find a quality gun. In the end, a whole variety of them were sitting 10 minuted ride away up the road, in my local market town. Incredible India, indeed!

Thats probably the one I had! Take good care of it, SOL.

For the safety catch problem, check the nuts under the trigger safety. If the front and rear nuts are not at the correct torque, there will be a problem. First, remove the front nuts locking screw. I assume you will find the front nut fully tightened. Loosen it by a couple of notches. Cock the gun and see it the safety engagement and release work properly. If yes, then replace the locking screw. If not, then loosen the rear nut, experiment and sort out. Be careful- when cocking, do not leave the barrel- return it to the straight position with the barrel firmly in your grip. There is a possibility of the barrel being flicked/trigger firing by itself unless the trigger is properly set.

Thanks ai. Yes, I think it may have been yours:) It's tuned to 19lbs muzzle energy and I must say, after the IHP it's a dream to shoot. I'll have a look at the safety problem tomorrow. Today I just enjoy its accuracy.

TenX I paid 40k for the gun. It looks and feels like 40ks worth of rifle. Nice walnut etc.

I'm off to see if I can't nail a rat!
