Hi Yaj,
I haven't the foggiest idea.
Is there any non-destructive method to determine this?

Sandeep

Hi Sandeep,
Have you tried examining the surface with a magnifying glass? Bone very often shows what looks like minute pores or pits. Ivory will show lines running on it or even cross hatching.
The hot pin test works if you remember what burning tooth smells like(if you've had occasion to visit a dentist). Its not too destructive if you use a fine pin and use it at a point which is least visible.
Do you any close up pics of the surface?
Regards,
Yaj.

Hi Yaj,
I must confess that I had not paid much attention to the handles.
However, I do recall noticing lines of some kind. But I had attributed these lines to tool-marks.
There were no pits as I remember.
I'll take some close-up pics this evening and post them.
Regards
Sandeep

I have one of those leatherman micras too, have it in my pocket right now actually, and it is a handy thing to have.

I don't have it on my keyring though, I have a Victorinox "Midnight Manager" which is handier in my opinion.

has scissors, knife, bottle opener (almost mandatory I think), a very handy phillips screwdriver, tiny flashlight that works OK, and the handiest thing is it also has a pen. I didn't think the pen would be that useful but darned if that is probably the most used item on the knife! I've gone through 2 of these handy knives so far.

I used to have a similar one earlier, without the flashlight but with a lot more tools. I used to have it along with my motorcycle keys. The pen/refill was very handy, though the refill did not last too long. I stopped using it because the knife caused a major scratch on my bullet petrol tank. I moved to a swiss card that i carry in my wallet.

Sandeep, the pic seems to show pits too, the inner surface of the scales looks rough too. Expensive materials like ivory would usually have a better finish so it may in all probability be bone. The hot needle test would tell you for sure, a fine red hot needle on the inner surface of the scale if you can recognise the smell of burning tooth

Yaj,
I haven't experienced the smell of a burning tooth :)
But I'll take your word that it is bone.
Thanks heaps.

Sandeep
